The problem we are trying to solve:
Research says, more than 2 million kids in India cannot afford a book to read. On the other hand, we have privileged people like us who have piles of books lying on our shelves – which we are neither reading nor selling as scrap (raddi).

Started in 2016, Books For All – the flagship project of NGO Guzarish (which is registered as a Trust) – aims to bridge this gap by collecting books from individuals/corporates/schools, etc. and distributing them to underprivileged kids across the country, ensuring every kid has access to books

Our solution:
We follow a simple 4 step model:
  • Collection: We offer free doorstep pickup of books on the donors’ chosen dates

  • Sorting/Categorization: Each book collected is brought to our warehouse cum library in West Delhi and then barcoded and segregated into 100+ categories (e.g., Class 1 English, Class 12 Hindi, English Story Books, etc.)

  • Distribution: NGOs across the country and government school-kids in Delhi are invited to our library to  pick up the books they need

  • Impact Assessment: We ask every NGO/kids to send us a 2-5 line book review – sharing what they learned from the book
Our Impact so far:
We have distributed 40,000+ books since inception and reached over 4 lakh kids, across 15 states in the country!

Why do we need funds:
Currently, logistics (the cost of hiring a vehicle which pickups books from our donor’s location) accounts for close to 30% of our cost – INR 20,000 per month. Further, the high cost of hiring a vehicle restricts us from offering door-step pickup every day. Thus, for making our collection scalable and sustainable, we are looking forward to owning our own logistics vehicle for Guzarish.

How will the money be used:
Owning our own vehicle will help us offer our collection facility to more donors and simultaneously save capital that can be deployed in hiring a skilled team. The team will help us reach more schools to achieve our goal of distributing 1 lakh books per year.

Target: Rs. 6,00,000

Cost Breakup:
  • Vehicle type: Tata Ace (CNG)
  • Cost of a new vehicle: 5.18 L on road
  • Cost of slight modification needed (covered body to be made): 0.3 L
  • Total cost: 5.48 L
  • Miscellaneous Costs (e.g., no entry pass cost, registration cost, insurance, etc): 52k
About Us:
Ankit Manchanda, an alumnus of SP Jain Institute of Management & Research, and his friends Jaibeer Singh (29), Prachi Luthra (29) and Sanymi Gupta (29), who are all Teach for India fellows, came together in 2016 and co-founded Guzarish. Books For All is its flagship project. With a strong association with reading as one of the best sources of knowledge and wanting to contribute back to the society, Ankit met like-minded people from Teach for India who learned from their experience that there is a dearth of quality reading material for children in government schools and also a major gap in their learning levels.

We are now a team of 10 members and 30+ interns in Delhi who are passionate to work towards our vision.
