Slam Out Loud: Empower children with a voice

SLAM OUT LOUD

SLAM OUT LOUD
is an initiative at Arts for Social Change (ASCI) India, which works at the intersection of arts, education, and leadership with a vision that "Every individual will have a voice that empowers them to change lives".

We provide access to artistic opportunities and art based learning to individuals for at-risk communities who face socio-economic, physical or emotional barriers to exploring arts. The diverse group of children, youth, and prisoners that we work within these communities discover their voices through the transformational power of the arts enabling them to dream bigger, achieve more and create the future.

Through Slam Out Loud, highly skilled and committed artists embark on our 9-month fellowship program, called “The Jijivisha Fellowship”, transforming themselves into life-long leaders of arts for social change. Using artistic creative expression (poetry, storytelling, and theatre) programs, we strive to consciously build 21st Century skills, leadership, expression and mindfulness across youth and children.

THE PROBLEM
While we continue to live in a time where dreams for the children from low-income communities are largely limited to the security of employment, we believe that something as fundamental as finding our voice, being able to express oneself should not be limited to the privileged class.

A well-rounded educational experience that includes the arts is closely linked to academic achievement, social and emotional development, increased motor skills, language development, better decision making, visual learning, inventiveness, cultural awareness, increased focus and confidence and fostering values of collaboration, perseverance, and accountability.

WHERE WE HAVE COME
45+ workshops with 1000 children in the urban slums of Delhi Every Month

WHO WE ARE
In their work with disadvantaged children, two Teach For India (TFI) fellows, Jigyasa Labroo and Gaurav Singh, in Dec 2014 founded SOL in an attempt to extend hands, heads, and hearts into creating a collective of powerful voices. They have conducted leadership development for multiple organizations over the years and have been TEDx speakers, recipients of multiple awards and recognitions.

We're extremely humbled to share that the last month has been one full of successes and learning for children and team at Slam Out Loud. Here are some key highlights:

a) Slam Out Loud was selected by HundrED to be one of the 100 inspiring education innovations from around the world. With a focus on 21st century skills and a wider global perspective, this will enable our journey even further in contributing to making change happen worldwide. Supriya, a child from our program and Pratibha, our team member were invited to Helsinki to present their journey and learning with audience comprising of policymakers, educators and other children. It was also an opportunity to learn about other exciting interventions across the world and foster collaboration.

b) Slam Out Loud was selected as one of the 25 teams to participate at UNLEASH+ pre-accelerator program in Shenzhen, China. The program was a week long boot camp cum competition that enabled us to revisit and refine aspects of our work and pitch our solutions to audience comprising of social sector experts, business experts, venture capitalists, philanthropists and CSR heads. Slam Out Loud was one of the 2 winners supported by Deloitte. Apart from a cash prize investment, we shall also receive support from Deloitte Foundation for our solutions to reach a new level.

c) To bring a close to this amazing month, three of our best and brightest children are also performing at India's largest spoken word festival - the Spoken Fest in Delhi on 30th Nov and 1st Dec. Slam Out Loud's partnership with Spoken has enabled children's voices to reach masses and bring alive our vision for everyone to see. We look forward to having you in the audience. Here is the link to know more about the event and book your tickets.
November has proved to be a highlight for us in more ways than one and we're incredibly grateful for your support as well as to share our journey with you!

Dear Supporter,

Voice For All is Slam Out Loud's imperative to build creative confidence in children using community-led and technology-enabled art education.

Through VFA, children create and share original artwork upon completion of tech-based courses that are interactive, accessible in regional languages, free of cost, and adaptable to context. Art Melas provide an opportunity to showcase this art as well as the children's learning. With Pratham as our distribution partner, our first theatre course has been launched in 950 villages across Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra reaching out to 50,000 children.

We recently completed recording our poetry course in Ismailpur in Unnao with children from the villages. Through the 3 days, children from Ismailpur and Semri got an opportunity to understand poetry as an art form, practised writing it and through a village level showcase, presented it to the elders in the village.

We are excited to see the course being launched in all the villages and looking forward to seeing children use poetry towards change.

Here are few glimpses from our 3 days.

Dear Supporter,

Thank you for being part of our journey.
We are so excited to share that the fourth cohort of fellows for our flagship program, The Jijivisha Fellowship has been inducted and placed in 40 learning spaces across Delhi-NCR.

Over the past two months, we came across some of the most passionate artists from the fields of performance and visual arts, dedicated to bringing their art forms into classrooms and enabling our vision even further.

The diverse set of fellows will be impacting over 1000 children, through a period of one year. The children will thereby receive 108+ hours of arts-based learning per year as opposed to <20 hours in schools and build the skills that will help them thrive.

We're so grateful for your support in our journey, and hope that the coming year brings with it more learning and joy than ever!

Love and gratitude,
