Slam Out Loud: Empower children with a voice

is an initiative at Arts for Social Change (ASCI) India, which works at the intersection of arts, education, and leadership with a vision that "Every individual will have a voice that empowers them to change lives".

We provide access to artistic opportunities and art based learning to individuals for at-risk communities who face socio-economic, physical or emotional barriers to exploring arts. The diverse group of children, youth, and prisoners that we work within these communities discover their voices through the transformational power of the arts enabling them to dream bigger, achieve more and create the future.

Through Slam Out Loud, highly skilled and committed artists embark on our 9-month fellowship program, called “The Jijivisha Fellowship”, transforming themselves into life-long leaders of arts for social change. Using artistic creative expression (poetry, storytelling, and theatre) programs, we strive to consciously build 21st Century skills, leadership, expression and mindfulness across youth and children.

While we continue to live in a time where dreams for the children from low-income communities are largely limited to the security of employment, we believe that something as fundamental as finding our voice, being able to express oneself should not be limited to the privileged class.

A well-rounded educational experience that includes the arts is closely linked to academic achievement, social and emotional development, increased motor skills, language development, better decision making, visual learning, inventiveness, cultural awareness, increased focus and confidence and fostering values of collaboration, perseverance, and accountability.

45+ workshops with 1000 children in the urban slums of Delhi Every Month

In their work with disadvantaged children, two Teach For India (TFI) fellows, Jigyasa Labroo and Gaurav Singh, in Dec 2014 founded SOL in an attempt to extend hands, heads, and hearts into creating a collective of powerful voices. They have conducted leadership development for multiple organizations over the years and have been TEDx speakers, recipients of multiple awards and recognitions.

Quarter Updates @ Arts for Social Change

Dear Supporters,

I want to start by thanking all the donors who have joined us in the last quarter. We are immensely grateful to have each of you on our journey towards individuals with a voice. Your contribution through this platform has helped us create opportunities for more than 1000 children and most importantly, reinstates our belief in why we do what we do.

Here are few updates from the past 3 months.

Update #1  : The Story of Voice - January 2018

This very special day saw 18 amazing artists and more than 20 volunteers lead art workshops for around 550 children from Kashmir. The arts form varied from theatre, dance, poetry, filmmaking, crafts and through the day, we saw children engaging and exploring the power that art carries.

It was inspiring to see facilitators put their passion to work while they created some beautiful learning spaces. It was also interesting to note how a lot of children admitted that this is the first time they are engaging in the experiences of this nature and they are walking out of the day connecting with themselves and what they feel joyful doing.
We hope the idea of exploring one's voice stays with them and the ripples of what they learnt to create a long-lasting change.

Update #2 : The Story of a Revolution - February 2018

Slam Out Loud was one of the 6 partners at India's first ever, Kids Education Revolution summit in February.

4 of our children were invited to take a workshop and perform at the Kids Education Revolution in Mumbai while 3 of them were selected to be a part of the 7-day event. It was overwhelming to see the children sharing what voice means to them while taking others through the journey of finding theirs. Breaking our textbook understanding of what education means, children created a space for educators, students and policymakers to really understand what a child wants.

Update #3 : The story of change: March 2018

We co-conceptualized Project Anjuman with Createnet Education last year which was piloted in 10 secondary Govt Schools of Delhi. Project Anjuman aims to build skills and exposure for children in Govt Schools of Delhi through arts demonstration and co-creation workshops.

This year, Project Anjuman aims to work with 300+ government schools and 100 artists impacting more than 200000 children.

Feel free to share our journey in your circles through our Facebook Page.
