Shashi and Komala live in a one-room hut with 15 family members. Their mother stays home to look after her 4 children – all of them mentally challenged, the two younger ones immobile. The free meals, vitamins, and special education Shashi and Komala receive at a free school for the mentally challenged are a huge relief, offering them a chance at a future. As Bangalore thrived, it attracted thousands of poor rural families like theirs, seeking better prospects. This Joy of Giving Week, from October 2nd to 8th, NGOs across Bangalore are rallying support to educate, empower, shelter, and rehabilitate these families, their children, and their elderly.
