I am fundraising to support kids in Bengal for their education and health

Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh has been an asset to JK Handloom for the past twenty years. This forty-three year old is the father of two school-going kids – a son and a daughter who are very keen passionate about Kashmiri arts. Ghulam is skilled at weaving the very special and intricate Kani shawl. This most exquisite and famous Kani shawls of Kashmir are woven using a special wooden needles called Kani and hence the name. The shawl is made by a special weaving and handloom technique and requires a minimum of two months to complete a simple shawl.

A favourite shawl of Mughal emperors, Ghulam earns Rs.150 per day through his work. Before getting into the business, he was used to sell clothes on the streets. He learnt the art of Kani shawls from one of his friends and has been into this crafts for so many years. Ghulam is especially excellent at finding traditional yet innovative colour combinations for the shawl. After choosing these combinations, he draws tracers on the fabric paper and starts weaving. Going a step further and investing in the planning of the pattern makes his work all the more exceptional. To cope with the growing demand for his unique Kani work and to fulfil his determination to take the art to global level, Ghulam is seeking a loan of Rs. 4 lakhs. Through this loan from Milaap, he hopes to increase the productivity.
