    Beigh Aqib Javid

    from Bangalore, Karnataka

I’m a security guard in Lucknow. After my class 12, I was forced to stop studying to help support my family. I worked hard to make sure that my younger brother, Beigh, got the education I could never have. He was studying to be an Engineer and wanted to get an MBA someday. Beigh was a distinction student throughout school and college. He was very dedicated and determined to make it big. I remember he used to always tell me that he would soon get a job and help us all. We’re from Kashmir and come from a very humble background. I had to leave home to get a job and Beigh went all the way to Bangalore to complete his education. Whenever I spoke to him, he told me how hard he’s working to do well in the exams. I was happy for him. I only wanted the best for my brother and he was making all of us proud every day.

On 9th January, I received the most devastating phone call. Beigh had accidentally slipped from the 4th floor of a building and was rushed to the hospital by his friends. I had never felt so helpless in my life. I was in Lucknow and didn’t know what to do. What worried me more was how I was going tell my parents. I rushed to Bangalore to find Beigh critical in the ICU. Just a day before the tragic accident, I had sent him a message saying I’d call him soon. By the time I reached the hospital, he had already had a surgery because of the severe blood clots in his brain. They shifted him to the ICU and put him on ventilator support soon after. My brother has been in a coma ever since then. I wish I had just made the call that day. Now I’m scared that I might never get to talk to him again.

My parents are completely devastated by the news. I don’t think they’ve still come to terms with it. I have to stay strong for them and take care of everything. I haven’t been able to go to work. My father runs a small shop, and we were getting by with my income. Now, we have nothing left. Our only focus has been to make sure Beigh comes back to us. Over the past few weeks, there’s been slight movement in his legs. He hasn’t had any more blood clots since the surgery, so his condition is improving. But he needs to stay in the ICU longer. It’s his only chance. We’re all waiting for him to wake up again and be the cheerful and kind Beigh that we all knew. We want to hug him and tell him how much we love him.

I often think about my last conversation with him. He was so excited to come back home after his last exam. It breaks my heart to think that now he might never come home again.
