After two miscarriages – their premature baby is this couple's hope

Prema and Shivanand have already lost two babies during pregnancy and were very excited about Prema's third pregnancy. But in the seventh month, Prema developed complications and an infection that caused her to deliver two months prematurely. The baby has underdeveloped lungs and needs a month's monitoring in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) till her lungs become strong enough.

Going back to her village exposed Prema to a dangerous infection

In the seventh month of her pregnancy, Prema went to her parents' home to give birth to the baby. This decision to go there is something Shivanand sorely regrets now. “Our parents stay in a village and the sanitation there is not good. If she had just stayed in Bangalore, she would have had a normal delivery and our baby would not be in danger,” he says.
Prema and Shivanand in the hospital with their baby

Their baby was born on May 29 and weighed only 1 kg at birth. She had under-developed lungs and needed to be resuscitated and then transported to a specialty hospital. She needs ventillator support and has to be kept in a sanitary environment. She gets her nutrition from a tube in her navel and with 30 days in the NICU, she will be completely out of danger.

For these 30 days, Shivanand is staring at an expense of 5 lakhs. He works as a store assistant in Bangalore and makes a only 20,000 per month. With living expenses so high in Bangalore, his modest savings were wiped out when Prema needed critical care during the birth of the baby. He has already spent over 5 lakhs in medical bills and cannot arrange for funds for his baby's life.

Prema and Shivanand's baby is fighting to survive

The baby is rapidly adapting to her new environment

“When she was born– her eyes were closed. They opened for a very short moment just once. Now her eyes open normally and her hands and legs move very actively. The doctor has also said that she has a good chance of surviving with the medical treatment. We just need some support to keep her in the hospital,” Shivanand says.

At present, Shivanand visits the baby for two hours everyday and Prema can manage to visit only once in two days. Despite how hard it is for them to keep their newborn baby away from them, they want to do everything that they can to save her. But this time even their best efforts will fall short.

Shivanand with the baby

Prema is just recovering from the infection and childbirth but now she is constantly worried about saving her baby. All the preparations Premaand Shivanand had made for the birth of their baby have fallen short. Nothing has prepared them to the possibility of losing their child because of not having enough money.
