Hope you are doing great and staying safe.
Like most of the Indians, you might be also actively following the updates on vaccines, opening of schools and colleges across states and UTs, recreational centers getting opened up etc. But our ‘home away from home’, IIT KGP is tentatively closed till 9th of August 2021. Same as the last semester, the institute is operating in a fully online mode during the current semester; Spring 2021. Apart from the debates on online education and concerns of well being of Azadians at home, one more challenge that we as Azadians need to address is the continual loss of livelihoods of ‘humans’ of Azad.
After the institute shut its gates in March 2020 on the onset of the pandemic, the businesses in our hall also got shut. These were the small businesses which served us day in and day out. Though they were small, the hall canteen (Ravi Da), stationary (SamD), Xerox corner (Swarup Da) had 18 employees in total! With the businesses closed, not only the owners of these enterprises, but the staff also suffered miserably. And not to forget the self employed ‘humans’ of our hall; Juice stall (Pradip Da), Nescafe (Raju Da), and several washer men (dhobis).
We (the fundraising team) took a serious note of the situation as the pandemic became more and more widespread in the month of July 2020. With a strong resolve to support the lost livelihoods, we came before you asking for funds to support these ‘humans’ of our hall. As any Azadian, you all showed that we are men of character, care and compassion. Together we raised a sum of 23.65 lakh rupees during the fundraiser which concluded in the month of August 2020.
It was a proud moment for all of us when we raised more than 1.5 times the target amount of 15 lakh rupees. It was a true show of our ‘Spirit of Azad’ and ‘KGP’. The support for the cause grew even stronger after the inter-generational musical performance: ‘Strings, Notes and Beats’. After the grand success of our musical show, we got into the business of disbursing the funds.
Over the last 8 months (till February 2021), we have disbursed close to 20 lakh rupees to 28 beneficiaries. It always gives us a real sense of satisfaction when we hear from them every month, about how the assistance is helping them. We have collected a few testimonials and stitched them into a video. Please have a look at it. We are confident that you too will feel proud and satisfied for being a part of this great initiative.
The time has come again for all of us Azadians, to make a second contribution to keep up the assistance from going dry. We will have a little more than 60 thousand rupees left, after making the payments for the month of March 2021. But as we addressed at the start of the letter, the institute gates remain shut till 1st week of August 2021.
We (the fundraising team) strongly believe that we as a community should support the livelihoods of the ‘humans' who served us during our wonderful stay at Azad. With all your support and blessings from the previous fundraiser, we aim to raise 10 lakh rupees, to continue the ongoing assistance for months of April, May, June and July 2021.
In the spirit of gratitude, we ask you and other well wishers of IIT KGP to come forward to help. These people are etched in the hearts of several generations of Azadians and we are confident that no Azadian would ever want them to shed a tear in these taxing times.
Please join us (and the massive team comprising representatives from 30 different batches) in raising the money. Let's show what ‘Azad ka Tempo High hai… Azad ka Tempo High hai… Azad ka Tempo High hai...’ means.
