    Ayushi Cecilia

    from Hyderabad, Telangana

“She was active and playful just a month ago. Now, she keeps crying when she sees doctors and nurses. This breaks our heart. I have no idea how to convey this to my family and ask for support. They don’t understand how she’s suffering.” – Thambe Joseph, Ayushi’s father.

4-year-old Ayushi at the hospital

Little Ayushi, who had a completely normal life until now, is in a lot of pain due to blood cancer. Over the past month, her condition worsened rapidly. She had to start chemotherapy right away and just in a week of treatment, her father exhausted all that he had saved. To survive, Ayushi needs additional chemotherapy but her father has absolutely nothing left to save her.

Ayushi was a playful and active child before cancer

She is hyperactive. She would go out, run around, jump around like a normal, happy child. Now, she’s just so weak. All of this is happening so fast that it is unbelievable. She was completely normal. It is a drastic change in very little time. “ – Thambe.

Ayushi is very critical and spent days in the ICU

When Ayushi’s lymph nodes had swollen up, her father, Thambe got suspicious and took her to Hyderabad, 100 kilometers away from their hometown in Nalgonda. After several tests were performed on the 4-year-old, Thambe’s heart sank when he learned that his daughter was suffering from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a deadly blood cancer that spreads rapidly if untreated.

Just a day after her tests, due to the large swellings in her neck, Ayushi was unable to breathe and her oxygen levels had dropped to 80%, which is dangerous, especially for a 4-year-old.

“She was admitted to the NICU immediately. She was supported by the ventilator and had to take oxygen for over 3 days. I was just so shocked, and I was asking myself how this happened so rapidly.” – Thambe

Only chemotherapy can save 4-year-old Ayushi

As an immediate measure, Ayushi started chemotherapy instantly. She needs to undergo 6 cycles of intense and brutal chemotherapy followed by 18 months of maintenance chemotherapy.

“I really wish that no other child suffers like this and no parent watches their child suffer so much. I am so depressed, I don’t really know what to do or say. I just keep quiet.” – Thambe

Thambe, Maria, and Ayushi at the hospital

It’s just been a week since Ayushi started her initial chemotherapy cycles and her father has already run out of funds to provide for the additional life-saving chemotherapy she needs. He is racing against time to save his 4-year-old daughter and is in dire need of help.

Thambe needs urgent help to save his daughter

Thambe works as a teacher in a school. He earns a meagre sum every month. His wife, Maria, works as a teacher too, and together, they’re able to sustain themselves and provide for their daughter. But, just in a week, Thambe has spent over Rs 3 lakhs on Ayushi’s treatments and medicines. He has exhausted all his resources even before her first round of treatment is done.

“Chemotherapy for blood cancer is expensive. I’ve received help from my family. My colleagues have helped me out too. It is not enough I just don’t know what to do now. I have no one to ask, and all my savings have disappeared. I have so many problems now. My family knows something is wrong but I haven’t told them that Ayushi has cancer.” – Thambe
Ayushi has no option but to undergo chemotherapy and other treatments for the next 2 years. The total cost of all her treatments is estimated to be around Rs 12 lakhs. Thambe, simply, cannot afford this and he is left with no option but crowdfunding.
