One of the main obstacles faced by underprivileged children is access to English Language education and digital literacy. Many children cannot afford to go to an English medium school, thus have limited knowledge of the English language. Even those children who do manage to go to an English medium school often struggle to use the language fluently because of the lack of proper resources, family circumstances as well as the lack of proper guidance and mentoring.
Many children face a critical disadvantage because they do not develop the English language skill required for digital literacy. A lot of these children have never seen or used a computer, hence, are unable to make use of the internet to facilitate their learning and improve their academic potential. Hence, the potential of many children in India is hindered simply because of the lack of equal resources and opportunities for learning and development.
Avantskill is a not-for-profit initiative that works towards providing English language education and digital literacy for underprivileged slum children in Kolkata. It is a community-led project mobilised by the people of the slums where we function as a catalyst to enable them to successfully run the project. At the moment, Avantskill has over 100+ children who attend classes regularly at the community club of their colony. We work closely with the club members, parents and people of the colony towards the mobilisation of the project.
Until now, Avantskill has been self-funded by Anita Chakrabarti – an EFL trainer with over 20 years of experience in the field. She started Avantskill with less than 10 children because she wanted to contribute for her society by sharing the knowledge and expertise that she gained through her journey as an EFL teacher.
Since then, the project is rapidly expanding, and more children are enrolling for classes every week. Hence, we require funds to keep the project running. Your contribution will help us with:
- Teaching materials, resources and aids for our students: Rs. 10000
- Build a small library with storybooks, activity books and ELT textbooks: Rs. 10000
- Stationery items such as exercise books, pens, pencils, erasers, etc: Rs. 5000
- Desktop Computers: Rs. 100000
- Digital teaching resources: Rs. 10000
- Projectors: Rs. 10000
- Tables and chairs: Rs. 10000
- Promotions for the project: Rs. 5000
- Planning events for parents, children and members of the community: Rs. 5000
- Paying/Hiring trainers and staff: Rs. 50000
We appeal to you with the hope that you will believe in our children as much as we do and open your heart out to them. Your generosity will enable our children to see bigger dreams for themselves and help them believe that they are not any less capable than anybody else.
