Ashalaya Trust has been rendering service to the underprivileged people especially for the children of the migrant quarry labourers for the last fifteen years. The educational and all round development opportunities for these children are very poor because of various reasons like migration, inaccessibility of schools, ignorance of parents, lack of motivation, poverty, bondage and poor socialization. There is an urgent need to improve the quality of life of the workers and their children in Thilkunte, Chikballapur.
Current Scenario:
- The children of quarry workers are not sent to schools, instead they accompany their parents to their place of work.
- This makes the children vulnerable to become child labourers.
- They also get exposed to the hot sun, quarry dust, stone blasting, pouring rain, accidents and other hazardous situations.
- Current centers are run in very small huts which are not spacious and safe enough to accommodate children.
There is an immediate need to construct a building with one hall, kitchen and toilet to run the non-formal education programme so that the children can study in a safe environment.
