Spark 21st century Learning And Life Skills Development In Children

Dear Donors,

Anusha was in the 6th grade when we first met her. Terrified of being wrong, she refused to speak in class, not to her teachers nor her peers. Any attempt at engaging her verbally was met with nervous silence. And her lack of verbal engagement severely impacted her ability to fully engage with learning in all her classes. It took close to two years to gradually bring down the barriers that she had put up. And to re-engage her in the learning process.

Anusha’s story is not unusual. Like her, there are a number of children who have been systematically stigmatized by an education and ecosystem that is quick to judge children and their capabilities around a very narrow set of measures. Over time these children struggle with confidence, independent thinking, stepping outside their comfort zone, trying new things, and taking risks. Their capacity to thrive in learning environments is often compromised. What these children need more than anything are vibrant opportunities for learning that embrace their distinct voices and celebrate their unique ideas.

Art education provides an inclusionary solution to developing valuable skills and attitudes in a wide range of learners who might otherwise be marginalized by the education system (Kennedy Center). According to research, art education can foster broad dispositions and habits of mind such as the ability to think creatively, envision, pose questions, test ideas, deal with ambiguity, and much more (Harvard University; Wallace Foundation). These skills and attitudes—21st-century learning and life skills—are integral for future success. They prepare children to be adaptive and innovative in the face of new demands and changing circumstances.

Unfortunately, art education remains at the fringe of the Indian education system. Questionable school art practices instituted by untrained teachers ensure that the arts remain at the fringe. The lack of age- and developmentally appropriate curriculum and practices contribute to art being viewed as an unnecessary extra, with little impact on student learning.

We at ArtSparks Foundation strive to provide children with access to high-quality, research-backed, art education programming that unlocks their minds, engage their hearts, and ignite creative confidence. We strongly believe that if we make learning and learning environments interactive and inclusive, more children will learn, and more importantly, shed inhibitions that restrict learning. In our effort to change the narrative around art in education, we also invest a significant amount of effort advocating for the inclusion of art in children’s learning. And, in training and capacity building teachers, educators, school leaders, nonprofit administrators, and more, in recognizing and utilizing the full potential of art to enhance student learning, growth, and development.

Our current efforts include:
  • Creative Learning Lab – Housed within under-resourced schools, serving children (1st to 8th grades) from underserved communities, Creative Learning Labs offer a year-long programme that nurtures children’s creative potential and fosters 21st-century learning and life skills. Carefully designed visual arts-based activities, materials, and resources contribute to this vibrant space for hands-on, experiential, inquiry-based learning.

  • Model School Programme – Through our Model School Programme, ArtSparks offers an innovative 3-month school-based programme that uses visual art and design as a means to foster the development of critical thinking, creative problem solving, communication, collaboration, and other essential 21st-century learning and life skills in children. Partnering schools also receive professional development for classroom teachers.

  • Partnership Programme – Strategic partnerships with other like-minded organizations that work with children and/or teachers allow ArtSparks to expand its programmes reach, empower others, and help further support children’s growth, development, and learning.

  • EdSparks Collective – EdSparks Collective is a professional development platform comprising 12 hands-on sessions for teachers, education non-profit administrators, parents, and more—anyone who engages with children’s education, and interested in exploring the full potential of visual arts and design to enrich learning. The programme offered is intended to build an understanding of the various dimensions of arts-based pedagogy, from child development and the arts to learning theories and their application within classrooms, to developing a robust curriculum that is interdisciplinary, and much more.
In the 2018-19 school year, our programmes served approximately 3000 students directly, while reaching additional children through our capacity building efforts of other organizations. Since 2015 we’ve also worked with close over 250 teachers/educators, helping build their capacities further. In the 2019-20 school year, we want to widen our reach and deepen our efforts within our partnering schools. With your help, we can!

Please consider supporting our efforts. A little contribution can go a long way, and we’d love to have you on this journey with us as we reinvent how children learn. Please also help us spread the word by sharing a link to this campaign with others.

We are able to accept INR donations from Indian Citizens only. All contributions are tax deductible under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.

Dear Friends,

Throughout the year we have proudly shared with you the work we are doing with school children. The children we serve are often first generation school goers from underserved communities—children that need alternative pathways to learn, and inclusive spaces to grow within—children who deserve the same opportunities as their privileged peers to develop 21st century learning and life skills essential for their future. Your support is vital in helping us ensure that these children continue to be offered learning opportunities that transform.

Our crowdfunding campaign continues, and every contribution makes a difference in helping us meet our goals. We hope you will join us with a contribution of any size by visiting: https://milaap.org/fundraisers/artsparks-foundation. And, we hope you will share this along as well, encouraging others to consider a contribution too.

Thank you so much in advance.

Warm regards,
Nisha
