I, Ansab Amir Khan, a 22-year-old journalist, writer, social activist, and poet from Aligarh, need your help. I seek to raise funds to pursue my Masters’ in Journalism from Goldsmiths, University of London - one of the most prestigious institutes in the United Kingdom. I promise to use this opportunity to report on issues concerning the unrepresented, the minorities, the oppressed, and the underprivileged of India and the world.
Currently, I am pursuing B. Tech (Mechanical) from ZHCET, Aligarh Muslim University, Uttar Pradesh. Since I was 17, I have sustained my education and family expenses on my own through my passion for writing and editing. Along with my studies, I have been working as an independent journalist and researcher. I have reported on the 2019 student protests in AMU and JMI and the subsequent government crackdowns, Indian activists booked under UAPA, scarcity of life-saving equipment in hospitals during Covid-19 pandemic, the impact of the Delhi pogrom, upcoming socio-political movements in Aligarh, young candidates in fray in the Bihar Assembly elections. Additionally, I have documented videographic and photographic evidence from police violence in Indian educational institutes last year.
In my brief journalism career, my bylines have been published in major Indian news portals such as The Wire, NDTV, The Telegraph, Firstpost, The Quint, and The Citizen, as well as international portals such as The Polis Project and The Real News Network in the USA. I am currently associated with Maktoob Media. In 2020, I had started a local news portal called VeritaPost.com from my savings in Aligarh, currently stalled because of a lack of funds. My entire work portfolio can be accessed from my portfolio at ansab.contently.com.
Throughout my academic career, I have been a good student - a topper at high and senior secondary school. In 2015, I was awarded for my performance in CBSE boards by the Minister of Human Resource and Development. When I was 19, I was selected as the youngest head of AMU Debating and Literary Club in the last 73 years. During this tenure, I trained more than 700 students in public speaking, writing, and quizzing. While at the club, I myself won national and international debates, quizzes, and essay writing competitions.
At the age of 20, I led the team that won the first prize in the national debating competition at the Association of Indian Universities National - the first for my alma mater. I then went on to represent India at South Asian Debate competitions. As an activist, I have been associated with organizing COVID-related relief in the city of Aligarh since February 2020 till date.
Ever since I heard of a senior studying there, I have harbored the dream to study at Goldsmiths. From that day, I began working hard to hone my academics and writing skills. As a young Muslim reporter and activist in India, I faced numerous obstacles to report the truth. I went against my major subject and the wishes of my parents to follow my ambition of becoming a journalist. I have, literally and figuratively, paid the price, by running all my expenses of rent, food, education, and equipment for reporting on my own.
My efforts have now begun to bear dividends. Last month, I was selected for the prestigious MA Journalism programme at Goldsmiths, University of London. Their Communications and Media department is ranked 7th in the world in the QS World Universities Ranking 2020. Apart from that, I have received 13 offer letters from all 11 universities that I applied to, namely City, UoLondon; Bristol; Warwick; Kent; Bath; Queen's Mary; UCL; Sussex; Goldsmiths; SOAS; and Edinburgh. However, I aspire to pursue the Masters programme at Goldsmiths considering the academic rigour and prestige of its journalism department.
Goldsmiths asks for a fee of 20,540 GBP, which is roughly 21.3 lakh INR. The living expenses in the UK are 1330 GBP per month in London. I have included that document in the files attached. The total requirement for me to pursue my dream to study at Goldsmiths would be around 33 lakhs INR. I would not be able to afford this by any means, and no property to use as collateral for a loan. Therefore, I turn to you for help. I humbly request you to donate or lend, the full or part of the fees for my higher education.
I have saved 1 lakh from my earnings and can raise 5 lakhs from a personal loan. If you can be so kind to donate or lend towards the rest of the amount, I shall always be in your debt. Any and every amount of donation would help me move a step closer towards my dream.
With this call for help, I have attached my offer letters, my complete CV, my academic records and awards, and some letters of recommendation for my character and professional testimonials.
If you may choose to help by lending, I shall pay back the amount as soon as I have earned the same. I will make sure to return the favor to the next generation of meritorious Indian students, Inshallah. If you are unable to donate, please share this appeal with other people in your network that might be able to lend a hand. I will be highly obliged if you could connect me with organizations, groups, or philanthropists that might be able to help me. If you help me achieve this dream, I would forever be thankful to you.
I thank you again for your kind consideration and look forward to hearing from you. Please reach out to me if you need any clarification or if you would like to verify any information.
