    Menstrual Hygiene For Underprivileged Women

    from New Delhi, Delhi

Hey everyone!
My name is Ambika Bhardwaj.
I am a law student, a writer and a researcher. Since my high school, I have worked with rotary club and various organizations to help people and make this country a place that we all dream of. In the year 2021, I have joined Hamari Pahchan NGO. Currently, I am working on “SUKHAD” project. As we all know that not every woman is able to have periods with proper means and hygiene. So, SUKHAD helps them with menstrual hygiene.
From childhood, girls are told to be silent about "that time of the month".  Periods are generally considered impure and unclean. Why. It is a natural process that needs to be treated in a normal manner like other biological processes. Not allowing the entry of women into any religious place during their periods is very normal for most people and this practice can be seen in many parts of the world.
Recently, there has been an initiative to destroy the taboo around the periods. But not many people are happy about it. There is still some stigma around periods and not a lot of people want to discuss and talk about menstruation. On average a woman menstruates for about 8 years during their lifetime. Don't you think that humankind should learn and educate themselves about this rather than considering it as "filthy" or "dirty". This stigma and taboo lead to misconceptions about periods among young boys and girls and prevent them from developing healthy habits. Educating young girls and boys about periods can help them in their holistic development and becoming responsible. Many women and girls do not have access to materials to manage their menstruation due to their economic condition.
The glorification of periods is important to stop all these problems that women and girls have to face just because society doesn't treat them as normal. This glorification will not make an aware society but also a healthy one.
We all have to do things on our part. Providing them with sanitary napkins, educating them about periods and normalizing periods rather than making a taboo around it is what we all have to do. So, I request you all to join this cause and help us in the betterment of the country.
