This Single Mother Is Desperate To See Her 8-Month-Old Baby Breathe

“Whenever Rudra would wake up, he would pull my finger and always wake me up. He was so happy. I just can’t forget those moments. Now, it is so hard to watch him suffocate and fight for his life with so many needles and pipes stuck to his small 8-month-old body.” – Soma, Rudranil’s mother
Soma wakes up every morning thinking that her baby boy will be discharged that day. Her 8-month-old Rudra, who has been fighting hard through life-support for over 7 weeks, can’t breathe at all without the treatment and needs to stay in the ICU. Soma, a single mother who is feeling lonely and lost, has nothing left to even pay for her baby’s medications.

Rudra’s lungs failed when he was just 6-months-old

Admitted to the hospital for what was considered to be a flu, Rudra was diagnosed with acute bronchiolitic illness just over 2 months ago. Now, 8-month-old Rudra’s lungs are completely blocked, leaving him gasping for air. He just can’t live without life-support and medications.

“I can’t count how many times his condition has become critical. I barely eat anything myself too. His feeding is also stopped when he’s critical, then how can I think of eating? Every night I look at his toys and cradle, and it feels so empty without him. I’ve cried every night for the last 2 months. They’ve been the worst months of my life.” – Soma, while weeping

Rudra was such a happy and cheerful baby

“He was completely normal. He was such a happy child and would laugh so much. He would love to play with all his toys and would get along with anyone who called him. When he was admitted to the hospital in March, I thought it was just for a few days. I had no idea that this would turn into a life-and-death situation. My 7-year-old daughter, Elena, loves him so much and asks me every day when her brother is going to come home. What do I tell her? If something happens to him, my world will be destroyed. But, I haven’t lost hope. I know he will come back to me, he is showing some signs too.” – Soma

Rudra is showing signs of improvement but needs help

The 8-month-old infant’s condition sways between good and critical so frequently. His oxygen levels improved slightly but he suffered from an infection in between too.

Despite being assisted by a ventilator for over a month, Rudra will suffocate to death if his treatment is discontinued. His lungs are still blocked and he needs to stay in the PICU, since life-support is his only hope for recovery. But his family can’t even afford his medicines.

Soma’s husband left home and never came back

“Just a month before Rudra was born, my husband Devashish said that he had to leave home because he got a job opportunity somewhere. But, it’s been over 9 months and he hasn’t even called, texted or mailed once. He’s a very good person and loves Elena, so this is very shocking. He’s never seen Rudra. I have no idea where he is or what he’s doing. Going through all of this as a single parent has been extremely hard.” – Soma

How you can help

Soma spends her entire day with her baby at the hospital. Her father, who works as a laborer in weddings, has provided around Rs. 2 lakhs to keep Rudra alive until now. Rudra can’t live without life-support. Soma, a single parent, can’t wait for the day she holds Rudra in her arms again but she can’t possibly afford to pay for his medications which themselves cost around Rs. 2 lakhs.

“I can’t think of losing him even in my worst nightmares. I know he will recover.”
Your support will save 8-month-old Rudra and ensure he sees his mother and smiles again.
