“My husband always used to say that he loved me. But if it were true he would have never left when I was dying. When I started suffering from a kidney disease 2 years ago, initially my husband stayed with me. After a few days, he flatly told me that I am a burden for him. He can’t be with me and our daughter. Before I could tell him that I needed him, he was gone while I was dying alone,” 30-year-old Laxmi.

Both fighting her kidney disease and raising her daughter alone isn’t easy for Laxmi

Laxmi is not just battling a chronic kidney disease but is also struggling to raise her 8-year-old daughter, Harini, single-handedly. Although they could never really afford luxury in life, Laxmi never stepped out of her home to work. She was happy with her husband and daughter until one day her life changed for the worst.

“It hurts to see my daughter having a broken marriage. Her husband fought with her day and night. Due to her kidney disease Laxmi can barely eat and sleep now. She lost so much weight. She had persistent fevers and used to vomit every day. Her husband didn’t support her even in that condition. He kept telling her that he can’t handle it. He didn’t think what will happen to his sick wife and small daughter once he left,” Shantamma, Laxmi’s mother.

30-year-old Laxmi is just 40 kilos, she wants to stay alive only for her daughter

2 years ago, Laxmi suddenly fell very sick. She had a fever all day and lost her appetite completely. A woman of 30 years weighs just 40 kilos. Nobody in her family could really understand what was wrong with her. It took them a while to know that both her kidneys have failed. To stay alive, she needs to be on regular dialysis.

“I know I might not live for long. But I will have to live for my daughter. If I die, she will become an orphan. I don’t want her to have that fate. I might not be able to be around her all day, but she knows after her school she has a mother to whom she can come back to. My kidney disease and her father abandoning us forced Harini to be mature beyond her age.”

Little Harini is struggling hard to grow up without her parents around

Harini knows that her mother is very sick and that’s why her Ajji (grandma) is taking care of her. She also knows that her father is not around because her parents have fought a lot. She doesn’t ask much about her father. Sometimes her father comes to meet her after school.

“My husband doesn’t even bother to call and know if I am alive. Although he comes to meet Harini after her school, he’s never really around. He doesn’t take care of the rising medical bills. He doesn’t care about my dialysis, medicines or injections.”

Laxmi’s mother and brother are struggling very hard to keep her alive against all odds

Laxmi’s brother, Ravi is an auto driver. He has no fixed income, but he tries to work overtime so that he’s able to take care of his sister. Laxmi’s mother, Shantamma also works as a laborer in a small godown and manages to earn Rs 3000 a month. Both her brother and mother have to spend everything they earn to save Laxmi.

“Ravi and I are trying very hard to keep Laxmi alive. With whatever we had, we have managed to spend Rs 2.5 lakhs so far. Her condition is deteriorating and she needs dialysis twice every week. What I earn in a month is spent in less than a week. Besides, there are injections and medicines needed to keep her alive. Our struggles can no longer keep pace with her deteriorating condition. I have to save my daughter at least for Harini. Her father is gone, I can’t let her mother be grasped by death,” Shantamma.

How you can help

Laxmi was forced to take care of her daughter alone after she was diagnosed with kidney disease. At a time when she needed her husband’s support the most, he left her. All Laxmi wants now is to live for her only daughter. The cost required to save her now and keep her dialysis for 2 years is Rs 2.7 lakhs and her family has nothing left to save her now.

Your support will help this single mother be alive for her only daughter.
