    Twins of Shahin

    from Kolkata, West Bengal

“I felt a dull pain in my stomach before I realized that my water broke. It was the sixth month of my pregnancy, and I kept telling myself that it was impossible for me to go into labour so soon. The dull pain soon turned into a sharp, intense pain, and I struggled to even stand up. The journey to the hospital was a blur. I remember being rushed for surgery. When I was conscious, my husband and brother were standing beside me. I could barely speak, and I mumbled asking where my babies where. My blurry eyes couldn’t find them. I then found out my newborn twins were fighting for their lives in the NICU. It’s been two months now, and my babies are still not out of danger.” – Shahin

Shahin saw her twins for the first time through the glass of the incubator only one month after they were born. She was extremely weak after her surgery, and it was weeks before she could walk. When she did see them, she was shocked. Her babies were on ventilator support, extremely weak and fragile. They’re barely the size of her arm, and without medical care, Shahin’s twins will not survive.

The twins are barely 2-months-old and have already experienced a world of pain

Shahin’s twin girl was 1080 grams when she was born, while her baby boy was 960 grams. As they struggled to breathe when they were born, they were quickly rushed to the NICU and placed on ventilator support. Now, they can’t breathe or even feed on their own. Her baby boy also had a severe infection in his lungs and his condition worsened considerably before becoming stable again.

“I’m waiting for the day I can take my babies home. I see them every few hours, but I long to hold them and feed them. Every time I try to sleep, I only think about how my babies are. I wonder if they’re awake, I wonder if they’re crying for me. This is the most helpless I have ever felt. The only way I can take them home is if they continue to get treatment. They need to get healthier and stronger. Otherwise, they will never survive outside the hospital.

After spending lakhs, Shahin and Shahid have nothing left to continue treatment

Shahin’s husband, Shahid, works for a private company in Delhi and earns 20,000 per month. Due to mounting medical bills, Shahid was forced to leave his babies and wife behind to try and afford the treatment.

We have managed so far with help from my brother and our doctor. She has been so supportive and understanding of our financial condition, but now we’re struggling to continue our babies’ treatment. Every day my husband calls me to ask about them, and I don’t have much to say. The money we have is almost over. We have spent nearly 8 lakhs, but our babies need 18 lakhs to get the treatment they need. I’m supposed to be protecting them from this pain, but it’s our own poverty that’s keeping them from a healthy life.”

How You Can Help

Shahin is still weak from the surgery. She's not only extremely stressed about her babies’ survival, but she and her husband also need to worry about the amount needed for their recovery. Her twins will only survive if they’re in the NICU for longer. Without this, the little ones won’t make it. Shahin needs your help to save her babies.

Your support will save Shahin’s 2-month-old twins.
