    Shaloni Tiwari

    from New Delhi, Delhi

In her sleep she sometimes says ‘mumma please help me, hold my hand, I’m falling’ and she starts shaking in fear. For 2 months now, she’s been laying on a bed. She can’t move left or right, she can’t stand or even sit up straight. Even a slight movement sends a shooting pain through her body.” - Shaloni's mother.

Shaloni (15) often dreams she’s falling from a building and wakes up, terrified. Unfortunately for her, it’s not just a dream. She has been bedridden for 2 months now after she accidentally slipped from the third floor of a building. Multiple wounds and fractures have left her weak, motionless and completely dependent. She’s had surgery on her hands, neck and pelvis so far, but she still needs more surgeries to completely recover. Mala and Vinod are desperately waiting for the day she can stand on her feet again, but they're struggling to continue treatment.

Shaloni has been confined to a bed ever since the tragic accident

“It was the day she finished her class 10 board exams. As soon as she came home she told me that now was her time to be free. She said she just wanted to enjoy her holidays. The day began with so much excitement and on a celebratory note, but ended with us almost losing her.

Shaloni has external fixtures on her body and is in excruciating pain

Shaloni was rushed to the hospital by her mother, Mala, and neighbors after she fell from the third floor. She was going to the terrace to play badminton with her neighborhood friends when she bent over the railing to see if they were behind her. Immediately, she felt dizzy and slipped. The painful fall left Shaloni with broken bones on both her hands, neck and pelvis. Saloni now has external fixtures on her body to keep the bones intact.

Shaloni was diagnosed with OCD 4 months ago

She was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder a few months before her exams. She kept having anxious thoughts and would have often had dizzy spells. The doctor told us that it was OCD, and she’s been on medication since. When she looked down from the railing, it was the dizziness that made her lose balance. Her dream is still to study BSc in nursing. She’s very focused and determined and someday wants to help people the same way they’re helping her now.

Her parents have nothing left to continue her treatment – she will never walk without it

With each day of treatment, Shaloni is getting better. Support from her family and friends has helped recover mentally from the traumatic accident. However, she still has a long way to go before she can recover physically. Shaloni requires dressings for her wounds every alternate day. She also needs surgical procedures to remove the external fixtures on her body and may need surgery for her right arm.

Her medical bills are 7 lakhs so far, and Vinod and Mala need 4 more lakhs to complete her treatment but have no means to afford it with Vinod's meager income. This is Shaloni’s only chance to get back on her feet again.

How You Can Help

Shaloni still has nightmares about the fateful evening that changed her life. She can only make it with continued, timely treatment.  For the next 3 months, she will require multiple surgical procedures before she can even sit up on her own again. Vinod and Mala have put everything on the line to get her treated so far, they now need your help to save their daughter's life.
