As India has imposed a complete lockdown of 21 days due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic, the stray dogs who particularly rely on leftover of street food outlets, hotels & meat shops are finding difficulty in finding food as they remain closed. If no measures are taken to address this issue, many will die of starvation & suffering.
We have launched an initiative to feed the stray dogs of Kolhapur on a mission mode and save their lives. We started feeding from 21st March in some areas. However, as observed, dogs are starving due to no availability of food throughout the city. Hence, we are expanding our reach and trying to cover most areas of Kolhapur.
Dogs, particularly strays eat less food in summer. Looking at the grave situation where survival is most important, we are feeding dogs only once; at night, in between 8-11 PM. Nights are favorable as dogs are together in groups which enables more dogs to eat. As of now, we are feeding biscuits or egg rice, as it is both filling and economical. Moreover, we also make sure there is enough water available for them. Usually in every summer, we keep pots made of mud and cement on more than 100 locations across the city where dogs are densely populated. Local members and volunteers take the responsibility to refill them.
Thankfully, Animal Welfare Board of India has made provision to allow dog feeders to go out during the times of curfew. Local administration has allowed us as well.
Jeev Raksha Animal Care Trust – Kolhapur is a registered NGO accredited by Animal Welfare Board of India. We attend more than 100 injured dogs per month, take care of more than 50 injured dogs in our shelter and have conducted more than 3000 sterilization (ABC) operations in coordination with KMC. Apart from this, we conduct many other animal welfare activities through legal activism as well.
The resources to help are very minimal. We need your valuable help to feed stray dogs and make sure they are alive and healthy. As we go through these tough times, we must also take care of stray dogs. Let not dogs die of starvation and suffering.
We urge you to help us with whatever donations you can. Additionally you can also donate biscuits, rice, eggs, etc. We would also be requiring volunteers to help and assist in feeding dogs.
All the funds received will be entirely used for feeding stray dogs in Kolhapur, Maharashtra.
We will be grateful for your donations.
