    Menstrual Hygiene For Underprivileged Women

    from New Delhi, Delhi

Do you remember how you felt after you had your period but realised you were out of pads, or have you seen someone go through this? That is the reality for thousands upon thousands of menstruators in India, and it is not a one-time issue for them, but one they face on a regular basis.

According to a study conducted by The Print, “out of all the menstruating girls and women in India, less than 20% use sanitary pads. Even in cities, this figure only rises to about 50%. There are three barriers to adopting menstrual hygiene practices: a lack of awareness, a lack of acceptance, and a lack of access. A lack of access to quality hygiene products continues to be a barrier to achieving 100% coverage for menstrual hygiene. Studies indicate that most girls do not have consistent access to good-quality menstrual hygiene products with 88% of women and girls in India using homemade alternatives, such as old cloth, rags, hay, sand or ash.”

I’m Satvika Sharma, a second-year law student and volunteer for various social issues. Currently, I’m a part of the project ‘SUKHAD’ under Hamari Pahchan NGO. ‘Sukhad’ is an initiative to make the life of the underprivileged a little easier during the time of menstruation. Providing them with sanitary pads, educating them regarding menstrual hygiene and making them understand that ‘Periods’ and talking about the same is not taboo. We are also conducting distribution drives every week where 'Sukhad Kit' is distributed which includes pads, soap, paper envelopes for disposal, and other essential items.

We are planning to distribute around 50K Sukhad kits to underprivileged women throughout the year.
Per kit price:
Sukhad kit for 1 woman = Rs. 1,400/-
Sukhad kits for 5 women = Rs 7,000/-

It has helped underprivileged women by providing them over 50,000+ sanitary kits which include 6 Packets of Sanitary Pads, 2 Soaps, 50-60 Disposal envelopes.

I request all of you to donate to this cause. Even a single penny makes a slight difference. With your support, we can help these women provide menstrual kits.

Or you can donate through the website as well
