India has hundreds of castes and communities, but are all treated as equal? The label ‘backward’ has been thrust upon the Irula tribe, robbing them of their dignity. This community traditionally made a living by catching snakes and rats. Following the government ban on snake catching, the community has turned to fishing and daily wage jobs. But they still experience poverty and discrimination.

They live in thatched roof houses in the remotest corners of villages. Their so-called homes lack sanitation facilities. The lack of hygiene has led to the occurrence of diseases and even deaths resulting from such illnesses.

Like any other community, the Irulas deserve good homes with basic sanitation at the least. The Government of India has provided them with a small area of land and an approval for the construction of houses. It has also
allocated Rs. 2 lakh for building each house, but there is a precondition.

The funds will be allocated only when the families construct the basic foundation of the houses and get them inspected and approved by the local
officer. The foundation materials cost Rs..30,000, which the Irulas cannot afford.

We can come together to help the Irulas. All it takes is a small contribution from many of us, to build good homes for the Irulas and help them live with dignity. Once we raise adequate funds and build the foundation, we will ensure that we get additional government funds and the houses are constructed.

Together, let’s take the first step to bring a lasting change in the lives of Irulas.
