“When we carry her, she cries because it hurts her stomach. She cries all the time. Even when she goes to sleep, she wakes up in an hour crying. She's so small, we don't know what we can do to make her comfortable.” – Swapna, Baby Radhika's mother
When Radhika was just 3-months-old, her parents Srinivas and Swapna were told that she would not live beyond a few months. Refusing to give up, they got a second opinion from another hospital. While the baby's liver is completely damaged, she can be saved through a liver transplant. Her parents are now desperately trying to arrange for a life-saving transplant.
Radhika's liver suffered complete damage silentlyBaby Radhika was born with Biliary Atresia. It is a condition where her bile ducts are blocked. The bile accumulates, slowly, painfully damaging the liver. Baby Radhika's liver was damaged completely in three months. She needs a new liver at the earliest to have a chance to recover. To her parents, news of her liver damage came as a shock.
“We didn't know anything was wrong with her. She had jaundice at birth, so we gave her medicines. But three months went by and her condition did not change. Out of the blue they told us to give up hope. We had a baby girl after a lot of praying – we did not have her to give up on her.” – Swapna
Baby Radhika's days are very painful
“Days that she vomits only once are good because we feel relieved that she will get some nutrition. Every day, she takes 5-6 medicines both drops and tablets. Her stomach swells up painfully and she can't even tell us what hurts. She cries so much – much more than normal children.” – Swapna
Radhika's parents are desperately trying to save herAfter the birth of their son, Srinivas and Swapna really hoped to have a daughter. But the joy of Radhika's birth was marked by constant anxiety about her health. A liver transplant promised to end all that. They are both ready to donate a part of their liver to save her. Only the exorbitant cost of the transplant stands in the way.
“I can't describe the pain we felt when they told us that she would not make it. With a liver transplant, there is at least a chance of saving her. She hasn't even started sitting or even grown small teeth. She shouldn't suffer because her parents could not save her.” – Swapna
How you can helpBoth Srinivas is a driver and Swapna works as a helper in a shop in Hyderabad. They both dreamed that they would together earn enough to keep their children happy. Unfortunately, they simply don't have enough to even save their little girl's life. They have borrowed heavily for Baby Radhika's check-ups and medicines. They have no resources left.
