    Syed Ghani

    from Mysore division, Karnataka

I am fundraising to help a 'Plant Genome Saviour Award' winner to set up a "Farmer's rice museum". Syed Ghani Khan's family was awarded their farm Bada Bagh, big garden by Tippu Sultan for growing the sweetest mangoes. Syed, who always wanted to be a curator of a museum, has decided to nurture a living museum. A museum of India's native varieties of rice.

Syed Ghani Khan, a renowed organic farmer, is known all over the country for his conservation of indigenous rice varieties and also about 140 different varieties of rare indigenous mango varieties - his family caring for them from as far back as 1700's.

Today he helps conserving 800 indigenous paddy varieties from all parts of the country. His farm is being visited all round the year by farmers and students from all over the country. Ghani is planning to establish a Farmer's Rice Museum, which is a first of its kind in the India.

This rice museum will act as a knowledge center, through which the concepts of conserving local strains of paddy will be shared. This will attract more farmers towards cultivating paddy. The museum will be the torch bearer for younger farmers, interested in conservation of indigenous paddy. Ghani needs financial support, for carrying out this wonderful activity.

Kindly contribute to ensure India's varied varieties of rice can have a future.

Thank you for your support.
