“One look at my son and I close my eyes in horror. I can’t recognize Saif any longer. I can’t even imagine how much pain he is going through. His entire body has turned black and he has rashes all over. The skin is coming off and blood oozes out from there. I can’t even hold my son when he is crying out in pain. I feel so helpless sitting beside Saif’s bed as I pray that no father has to see his child in this horrific condition.” - Faisal, father of 7-year-old Saif.

Way back in 2016, Faisal and Rebecca noticed that little Saif has been growing weak day by day and his pallor was also fading. They decided to take him to the doctor and it was here that they got to know that Saif has thalassemia, a rare blood disorder. Saif’s condition was so serious that doctors advised an immediate bone marrow transplant. On 16 March, 2018, Saif underwent a bone marrow transplant - her elder sister, Nabila was a matched donor. The surgery went fine and for the first two months, it seemed like Saif was recovering. Faisal and Rebecca started seeing a bleak ray of hope for their little son.

An old pic from the times when Saif was healthy

But the future had something else in store in for Saif. Within two months of the bone marrow transplant, rashes started appearing all over his body. Saif started itching them and blood started coming out of the rashes. He also complained of a severe pain in his stomach.
He was again taken to the hospital and was diagnosed with Graft versus Host Disease. It is a reaction that develops after an allogeneic bone marrow transplant. An allogeneic transplant is one in which the donor is not the same person as the recipient. Bone marrow cells are a major component of the immune system. In GvHD, the transplanted cells see the recipient’s body as foreign. The grafted cells then attack their new host.

Saif is in the ICU and needs immediate treatment for his condition. He doesn’t speak or eat anything and winces as he lies down on the bed - he is so sick that he can’t even turn to his sides on his own. He needs help for simple tasks like that of using the washroom.

How you can help

7-year-old Saif’s mother Rebecca is a school teacher who is trying very hard to arrange for the 10 lakhs that is needed for her son’s treatment. Faisal is unemployed and Rebecca is the sole breadwinner for the family. She somehow managed to arrange the funds for the bone marrow transplant but all her savings are now used up. Although, the doctors have assured that Saif will get better with the treatment Rebecca and Faisal can do nothing. Only your support can help them save their little Saif.
