Appeal to continue to make Bangalore's buses safe for all!

When the country was burning post Nirbhaya and when everyone took to the streets protesting, some of us felt that the best and easiest way to create impact and deter crime would be to equip women and young girls with basic behaviour understanding skill. This will help us stay alert, be prepared and remain confident so we can address most situations of harassment at the first level, without becoming victims.

This gave birth to Durga (www.durgaindia.org) where we work with women and girls facilitating theatre based workshops helping women think seriously about their safety and come up with various solutions to address harassment.

We are a registered public charitable trust working in this area for the last 3 years and have created over 5000 Durgas across Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune and Jamshedpur. Over the 4 years we have validated that our model works, the women find our work impactful and have benefitted as well.
This fund raising campaign is specifically for creating Safer Transport for Women and Children - deterring sexual harassment.

90% of women in public transport feel violated and vulnerable and CCTVs and apps cannot be effective as deterrence of sexual harassment. To this effect our Durga Panic Alarms have done an excellent job during the pilot phase and we are now scaling installation of panic alarms in Bangalore's BMTC buses.

In the first phase we will install alarms for 500 buses. We have already received funding for 50 and need for more.

Each Panic Alarm will cost about Rs 6500. Please contribute towards this so we can indeed together make safe spaces for women and children within public transports in the city. The Alarms were designed with the help of engineering college students and now manufactured by a good public listed company based in Bangalore.

Dear Donors,

Thank you for the wonderful support!

Here is a quick update!

Raise your hand and rise to help!

Durga Alarms were fixed in BMTC buses to help a woman raise her finger and trigger a response to harassment. Raising awareness in the bus that there has been a situation of harassment, a woman is able to get help from bystanders and staff of BMTC on the bus. A simple response of people in the bus collecting together and resolving this harassment works best rather than sophisticated GPS which send messages to police stations and control rooms.

Our work expanded to working with drivers, conductors and passengers of buses too! We have done some great work, learning about the issue more and supporting at each stage making acting bystanders all the way. Women feel happy that they will have someone on the bus who has their back!1000s of women and girls experience harassment in buses every day. Do we have enough room in police stations, lockups and jails to send perpetrators? Should we not give perpetrators a clear message that as good samaritans and Real Heroes, we will NOT accept such behaviour and address it ourselves? Imagine, how powerful is that!!

We have fixed alarms in 160 buses in Bangalore. Please, could you help us continue with this project by contributing whatever you can?

Kindly keep sharing and supporting the campaign.

Thank you all for the support!

Regards
Priya
