    Deepak

    from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu

"After he fell on the floor one day, he had swelling on his forehead that we thought would heal by itself. Then he got a high fever which did not subside for days even after taking medicines. We knew something was wrong but never imagined cancer as a possibility  even in our wildest dreams. Two months ago, he was active and was running all around the house. Now weakness has taken over him, his little body is not able to bear the painful chemotherapy. He has made friends with all the nurses and doctors here but he feels defeated when they give him injections. He gets angry and cries the whole day. I dread the thought of his hair and eyebrows feeling down. I can't bear to see him going through this. I don't know how long we can endure this pain." - Krishnamoorthy, Father of 4-year-old Deepak.

Deepak is diagnosed with cancer that can progress quickly and kill him without treatment

4-year-old Deepak is the youngest on of Krishnamoorthy and Radhika. He is pampered all the time by his parents and his sister Sudha (7). Deepak is everyone's favorite in the street he lives. He gets along with everyone so easily. When the little charming boy was diagnosed with cancer, everyone including his parents was in disbelief. But they were soon forced to accept  reality, seeing his condition turning from bad  to worse in just a matter of days.

"When we took him to the hospital, they took scans. The next day, my wife went to the hospital to collect the reports. She called me and said that doctors want to talk to both of us. She was all in tears. My heart was beating rapidly. I was praying all the way that nothing should be serious. But I know nothing could have prepared us for this terrible news. No parent can bear to hear that their child's life is uncertain. We haven't come out of the shock yet." - Krishnamoorthy.

Litle Deepak will not survive without continued chemotherapy and an urgent transplant

Deepak is diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a type of cancer that affects the white blood cells. It progresses rapidly and creates immature blood cells in bone marrow and blood. Doctors said that he needs multiple cycles of chemotherapy to battle dreadful cancer. But now that is not enough, he needs urgent bone marrow transplant to recover completely.

"We have told him that he has bad blood in his body and we needed to replace it with good blood. He innocently asks how much more good blood he needs so that he can go back home. He plays in the hospital for a while but soon he feels tired and sleeps the whole day. He is not able to eat. His blood count keeps dropping and coming back to normal. My daughter doesn't know that her brother has cancer. I have told her he'll be back home soon. We have not slept from the day of his diagnosis. We live in constant fear of losing him." - Radhika.

Father is neck- deep in debt and cannot afford to continue the treatment

Krishnamoorthy works as a driver and earns Rs 10,000 per month with which he manages to feed his family. Within 2 months, he has spent Rs 3 lakhs for Deepak's treatment. He had taken a loan at high interest. He was not able to be regular at his work and has incurred a huge debt now. Now he as no money even to buy notes and pencils for his daughter. He spends every rupee for the treatment yet he is always running short of money and the bills are mounting up every day.

"When doctors told me that he needs to start the treatment immediately, I didn't give it a second thought. I took a loan at high interest and managed to start the treatment. I was determined to save him at any cost. I felt relieved when doctors told that he is responding to the treatment. But the painful journey has not ended. I don't have anything left with me to pay for the transplant. I'm slowly losing hope. I don't know how I can manage to continue the treatment. I can't eat or sleep even for a minute at peace. I'm trembling in fear of losing my son." - Krishnamoorthy.
