The Indian Districts with lower levels of social, economic, education and health indicators have the highest incidence of blindness. People with no and low vision are at a significant disadvantage. They suffer from poverty, malnutrition, lack of education opportunities and social isolation. This in turn affects their families and ultimately the community at large.

Dr. Ajit Kumar Poddar, based in Bihar, India is the medical director and permanent trustee member of Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital. With more than 15 years of experience in the field of ophthalmology and passion for community service, he is working for the cause of AJEH, which is eradicating curable blindness from low-income states of India. Having presented papers at the state, national and international levels, he has completed over 100,000 surgeries and have organized various CMEs, scientific seminars, and surveys under his leadership.

Mastichak (Bihar) headquartered Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital is engaged in eliminating blindness in low income areas of the country, catering to blindness in parts of Bihar and Eastern UP. .Akhand Jyoti started curing blindness in December 2005, concentrating principally in Bihar. Akhand Jyoti is now one of the top five eye hospitals in India. Bihar, being one of the poorest Indian states, is the worst hit with 700,000 blind and 4.3 million visually impaired people.

Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital works in eradicating curable blindness by providing affordable, accessible and sustainable eye care services and empower women to achieve this. The eradication of blindness significantly improves dignity, hope, and independence to the lives of millions of people in the low-income states of India.
