Most of the rivers including the Brahmaputra are flowing above the danger line causing widespread floods. Thousands of families have been left homeless as this levels of flooding wasn’t anticipated. Majuli is a remotely located flood-affected island district. It has a population of about 170, 000, with a majority of the population belonging to the tribal and the scheduled caste communities collectively. Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood. Forty villages across two panchayats in Majuli have been have been mapped to be worst affected by floods where many families have taken shelter either in government relief camps or self-built temporary shelter. In another region of Assam where our partner organization is active, have too reported dire situations from the floods. 52 villages in Kalgachia Circle under Barpeta district have seen heavy infrastructural damages from this floods. With the livelihood of people is in crisis from back to back damages of COVID pandemic and floods they need support to survive and restart their living.

Approach

We are preparing to extend humanitarian support to 1000 affected families in three flood-affected districts of Assam; Majuli, Lakhimpur, and Barpeta. The support includes food and hygiene kit containing rice, pulses, oil, soap, masks, and other essentials. The quantity of dry ration may last for 14 days for a family of four. They will also be provided with tarpaulin sheets which can be used for protection from monsoon and yarn so that weavers can continue their livelihood.

The objectives of our support in this situation are -
*Identification of the people in need and regular follow-ups on their situation in this crisis
* Provide relief to the most needful in the form of ration support
