    This fundraiser will benefit

    Miss Amita

    from Mangalore, Karnataka

Amita is a 8-year-old who has never gone to school because she was always too weak to leave home. Her parents, daily-wage workers from Assam didn't realise she was sick till their employer asked them to take her to the doctor.

The doctor told them she had congenital heart disease and needed immediate surgery. Since then, her parents spend all the money they make on Amita and her medicines. They have so far spent Rs 50,000 in the last two months, despite jointly earning less than Rs 10,000 per month.

They now need Rs 1.75 lakhs to give her the surgery that can finally make their daughter healthy and normal.

Coming to Coorg for a life away from poverty

Hanif Ali came to Coorg, Karnataka three years back, determined to make a better life for himself and his family. Originally from Assam, he and his wife work as a day-labourers on a coffee estate, in Mutharmudi village. In a week, they make 1,800-2,000 depending on the work.

They have a daughter Amita, 8, and son Farid, 4. While their son is a boisterous child, Amita was always weak and emaciated. Because she always was so frail, the parents didn't send her to school.

They could only give vague answers to Farid when he demanded to know why didi got special treatment at home. Or why he was stopped from playing too rough with his sister.

Amita with her family

While the diagnosis means eventual expenditure beyond their means, the news has an upside. Amita's heart disease can be easily corrected with a surgery. Amita herself has a new excitement now. She knows that she will get better and she can play and go to school like all the other children.

"Now that I know that she is sick and she can be cured, I will send her to school once she is better. The owner, our 'Madam', has promised to help her with Kannada. Amita is happy. She is our only daughter," her father says.

Help Hanif save his daughter and give her the gift every child deserves - a normal childhood.
