Anil Kumar Sharma, a Sarthak trainee, having locomotor disability, lost his job as his organization wound up operations in Gurgaon due to COVID 19. This sudden loss of job affected not only affected Anil but his entire family who was dependent on him.
A 5 year old child named Deepanshi was undergoing treatment for Cerebral Palsy in Sarthak’s Early Intervention Centre. She was not able to hold up her neck while sitting. She was progressing well with therapy but in last few months due to lockdown her progression graph declined after her sessions were interrupted.
There are many PwDs who are eager to stand on their feet through new skills learnt through training by Sarthak. They are unable to do so as they can’t move out of the house. They don’t have the necessary means (laptop, WiFi, Data plan etc) to attend online classes held by Sarthak. There are over 20 million people with disability in India. They need to earn their own livelihood through skill development and employment so that they can earn on their own, buy medicines and equipment to manage their own condition. Distancing is not an option for many as they rely on others like trained workers and caregivers.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, many people with disabilities who operated small businesses or other informal livelihood ventures (i.e. home cell phone repair or machine repair shops, selling goods etc.) were unable to earn for their own selves and family as there was a significant loss of income. This loss is not compensated by government programs. Aman who runs a small shop in Ambala have lost the livelihood in the COVID era and is trying hard to make his ends meet.
Due to lockdown restrictions on movement and lack of income, PwDs are not being able to acquire protective material including face masks, hand sanitizers and hand wash. These are necessary as many are in direct physical contact with caregivers and support workers.
Sarthak devised a strategy to support persons with disability so they can also live their life with dignity and respect. In that context, ‘Team Sarthak’ appeals to like minded individuals to support following initiatives by contributing any amount from the heart !

  • Provide direct online education (where possible) to PwDs and their families on how to protect themselves against COVID-19.
  • Connect PwDs with available community resources that maybe difficult to access during this period of lockdown like Pharmacies, Clinics and assisted equipment providers.
  • Imparting Online Skill Building Training to 1,000 Persons with Disability
  • Immediate Assistance/Placement support to 700 Persons with Disability
  • Online counselling of Children with Disability (upto 5 years of age) through trained Psychologists
  • Supporting entrepreneurs to help restart their business
