Lets help Poonthura !!! (Watch-Contribute-Share)

Every July, 500 children enter secondary school in Poonthura, a fishing hamlet in Kerala.  Nearly one-third of them drop out by the end of the year. This year, we are kickstarting our ambitious goal of achieving zero drop-out rate. Join us in our #Mission100% before October 2nd.

The story of Poonthura

17-year-old Anita stays with her parents and 9 siblings in a tiny house in Poonthura. Anita’s younger sister has cerebral palsy. Only 3 of her siblings are in school. The others have all dropped out. There are 20 people living in this tiny two-bedroom house. Anita’s parents,  her 9 siblings, her grandmother, wife and children of her elder siblings.

The situation in the house is miserable. There is not enough room for all the members to stretch out and sleep. This situation isn't unique to Anita alone. Almost all the families in this fishing hamlet are in severe financial distress. The underlying tensions between the members result in fights breaking out often.

The students successfully complete their primary education but when they reach adolescence, they drop out of school to lend their families a hand.  7 out of 10 teenagers before finishing secondary school drop out due to a volatile family environment.  Rampant alcoholism, substance abuse and lack of role models have been cited as the top 3 reasons for the high drop-out rate.

Teachers in this school are unable to address this issue because of the skewed teacher-student ratio not to mention poor infrastructure and the additional responsibilities of carrying out non-teaching related paperwork and duties.

Mission 100%: Our ambitious goal is to ensure zero drop-out rate in Poonthura's schools in the next 3 years.  There are 4 secondary schools in Poonthura with a total of 2000 children between Grade 7 and Grade 10.  This year. we begin with St Thomas Higher Secondary School with 500 children in secondary school.

We are specifically focusing on these grades as the first signs of dropping out of school emerge when a child reaches Grade 7.
Our approach is two-fold -
  1. Prevent teenagers falling into the trap of alcoholism and drugs by engaging them in school activities for longer hours through personality and skill development programs and providing them adequate nutrition.
  1. Placing Education Animators in the school that teenage children that can look upto as role models and approach for any issues they may face in school or otherwise.
The whole and sole focus of  Education Animators is to ensure the skills and personality developments initiatives are carried out in the school as well as identify and counsel children on the verge of dropping out.

What do we plan to do with the funds?

Rs.10,000 a year, will help a child from Poonthura get quality education. This includes
  1. Special coaching in math, science and English
  1. Wholesome, nutritious meal a day.
  1. Medical check-ups with follow up treatment.
  1. Career guidance classes, and
  1. Personality development classes.
