    Sharath

    from Bommasandra, Karnataka

His condition is only getting worse as the days are going by. His nose and ears have started bleeding now. Sometimes, he even bleeds from his mouth, and all my son can do is cry. He’s terrified of the blood. He looks to me for answers, but I don’t know what to tell him. He’s only 10-years-old, how can I tell him a serious disease is killing him?”

Sharat recently had bleeding in his brain, which has made his right eye completely red. He is scared to even look at himself in the mirror now. What his mother, Kaveri, thought was just a fever, is actually a rare and fatal blood disorder. Sharat has been taking blood transfusions every 20 days for 6 months, but he’s now clinging to life. Only a bone marrow transplant can completely cure him.

Sharat is losing blood every day and his body can’t make enough blood to keep him alive

Sharat has aplastic anemia, a condition in which his body doesn’t produce enough new blood cells. People with low platelet counts tend to bruise and bleed easily, and the bleeding is often hard to stop. Nosebleeds, bleeding from the ears and gums have been a part of Sharat’s life for 6 long months now. Every day is a battle for him and Kaveri is distraught watching her son suffer so much.  The only thing keeping him going are blood transfusions, but now, even that is not enough to keep him alive.

“My son is always in pain. He asks me why he feels so weak all the time. The blood transfusions make him feel better for a few days, but soon, he’s back to feeling weak. It’s a never-ending cycle for him. Now the doctors say that there’s a solution for this, a bone marrow transplant. I’m relieved that there is a way to make him better. He won’t have to go through this every few days, he won’t be in pain, and the thought of that makes me hopeful, but I’m soon reminded of how I might never be able to afford the transplant.”

Sharat with his mother and grandfather

Sharat has grown up without his father’s support after he abandoned the family 5 years ago

For 5 years now, I’ve brought up my two children without any help from their father. Even when he found out about Sharat’s condition, he didn’t call or even visit him. He doesn’t care that his own son might die without treatment. I can’t imagine how that makes a young boy feel. Sharat doesn’t know what’s happening to him, he’s too young to understand so he keeps asking me when he’ll feel better again and go back to school. I have to be his strength now, but I’m helpless. I’m grateful to my father who has helped us through these difficult times, but he is so old, there is only so much he can also do.”

A bone marrow transplant can save Sharat’s life, but a dire lack of funds is standing in his way

Kaveri is a daily-wage worker and doesn’t earn enough to support Sharat’s treatment. Work is irregular and with Sharat's regular hospital visits, she can't go to work often. No matter how much she tries, Kaveri just doesn’t have the means to go on anymore. With help from her father, she was able to continue his transfusions till now, but Kaveri is at a dead end.

“I’ve done everything on my own so far, but I need help to save my son now. If not for my financial condition, my son wouldn’t be suffering so much.”

How You Can Help

Sharat is only 10-years-old and this blood disorder is making his condition worse each day. Sharat can stop living a life of pain and suffering with a bone marrow transplant. It can save his life, but Kaveri doesn’t have the means to afford it. She earns a meagre income and all her savings have gone in his treatment for the past 6 months. You can help Sharat get the treatment he needs and save his life.

Your support will save Sharat’s life.
