The Story Behind…

Singaniguda village is a tribal village in the forests of Malkangiri District in Odisha state, one of the least developed districts in India. In a visit to the village to monitor “Routine Immunization”, Rajesh Tamadapally (a Prime Minister’s Rural Development Fellow in the district) came to know that a 2-month old baby had died of Pneumonia recently. The baby was born at home with a birth weight of 1.9 kgs, whereas the average birth weight for babies is 3.4 kgs. When asked why the delivery did not happen in a hospital, the local health worker said:

“We brought the mother to Maternity Waiting Home 7 days before the EDD (Expected Date of Delivery). But she left the Home without informing anyone, since one more pregnant mother from the same village had done the same. Then she delivered the baby at her home after a couple of days. The tribal people do not understand the importance of deliveries at hospital how much ever we tell them.”

This is not just one case. Maternal & Infant deaths are very common in rural & tribal pockets of India.

Why are we fundraising?

This experience has inspired us to launch our first project to try to solve the problem of inadequate and improper health awareness in tribal villages. In the coming months, we will start working on a project focused on creating social leaders. We are looking to raise funds for these two projects.

Health Awareness Campaign (HAC)

Our first project is aimed at providing health awareness to pregnant mothers in order to promote safe motherhood and healthy children in tribal villages in Malkangiri district of Odisha.

Under the HAC project, we have identified a woman in the village, who has been trained on using a tablet to show videos regarding health awareness. We have started the project in Singaniguda village, and the response has been encouraging. We plan to expand the project to a total of 10 villages, and are raising funds for the same.

Champions of Change (CoC)

Champions of Change is an initiative that aims to create social leaders who will proactively respond to and fight for social causes with empathy and commitment, and focus on action-oriented solutions.

Under this project, potential changemakers (here-on called ‘Yaatris’ - meaning people who are going on a journey) will be exposed to grassroot realities and intern with organizations working to solve social issues. They will be connected to, and learn from, inspiring social leaders. Collective learning and knowledge sharing will be encouraged among them. Later on, if the Yaatris have a project idea and need help in its planning and execution, they will be mentored and supported.

We plan to place 20 Yaatris in 10 NGOs across India, working on a range of issues, in the summer of 2016, as our first batch of Yaatris, and we are raising funds for this project too.
