Maragondanahalli lake is a water body in Mandya district that is dying a slow death.

As the lake has not been de-silted for over a decade, its holding capacity has been reduced to a small fraction of its true capacity. Though the lake actually covers an expanse of 32 acres, encroachments have reduced its area by at least 8 acres.

Desilting the lake and the removing the encroachments will set it back on the path to rejuvenation. The soil removed from the desilting process is highly fertile and free of any harmful pesticides and artificial fertilizers typically used in modern farming.

The exercise to clean up and restore the lake involves removing the silted soil, clearing the encroachments on the lake's borders and planting a green barrier to prevent future encroachments.

The soil that is removed from the desilting process is given to farmers to promote organic and sustainable farming methods. Each truckload of silted soil is given to the farmers at the rate of Rs.70. The other costs involved is the transportation cost of about Rs.200 for each truckload of soil. As many of the farmers in and around the lake are small and marginal farmers, they cannot afford the entire cost of a truckload of silted soil rich in natural nutrients.

This fundraising campaign will help to subsidize the cost of transportation to the farmers who cannot afford the cost of transport. Your valuable contribution to this project will go a long way to promote sustainable farming.

The second phase of the lake rejuvenation will involve planting trees around the periphery of the lake to prevent future encroachments and arrest soil erosion.

Our goal is to raise sufficient funds for the project so that it is completed well in time before the monsoon starts.
