About the campaign

Why am I fundraising?

No matter where you are in the world, there are always women’s rights to be fought for and gained. In rural India, the fight is to make women aware of their own rights so they can empower themselves.

India has made great strides in addressing women’s issues and has passed laws dealing with sexual harassment, dowry, domestic violence, employment and more. However, due to lack of basic education in rural areas, these laws have largely escaped the attention of many rural women and men alike. Women do not know that they have recourse if they experience violence or harassment, and they are not aware that they have rights to education and employment. On International Women’s Day, March 8th, the Karunalayam Rural Welfare Society plans to expand their awareness programs by hosting an event for hundreds of women to attend, learn their rights, and how they can exercise them.

Speaking at the event will be government officials and women’s rights activists to demonstrate their rights, answer questions, and offer advice. Due to the recent floods in Chennai and parts of Tamil Nadu, there will also be counselors to provide psychological counseling and distribute clothing and other items to those who have lost their belongings and more.

The Karunalayam Rural Welfare Society believes that gender parity begins with knowledge, and with your help, we can achieve it.

What do I plan to do with the funds?

KRWS plans to use the donations for all the items necessary for putting together this awareness event. From a projector to illustrate the speakers' points, to pamphlets describing women's basic rights, every dollar counts toward creating awareness.

We will also use this event to expand the awareness program so that we can educate more women and men in the surrounding Pondicherry area. Your contribution will go far in spreading awareness to the people of rural Tamil Nadu and help to lift them out of severe poverty.
