When the country was burning post Nirbhaya and when everyone took to the streets protesting, some of us felt that the best and easiest way to create impact and deter crime would be to equip women and young girls with basic behaviour understanding skill. This will help us stay alert, be prepared and remain confident so we can address most situations of harassment at the first level, without becoming victims.

This gave birth to Durga (www.durgaindia.org) where we work with women and girls facilitating theatre based workshops helping women think seriously about their safety and come up with various solutions to address harassment.

We are a registered public charitable trust working in this area for the last 3 years and have created over 5000 Durgas across Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune and Jamshedpur. Over the 4 years we have validated that our model works, the women find our work impactful and have benefitted as well.

This fund raising campaign is specifically for creating Safer Transport for Women and Children - deterring sexual harassment.

90% of women in public transport feel violated and vulnerable and CCTVs and apps cannot be effective as deterrence of sexual harassment. To this effect our Durga Panic Alarms have done an excellent job during the pilot phase and we are now scaling installation of panic alarms in Bangalore's BMTC buses.

In the first phase we will install alarms for 500 buses. We have already received funding for 50 and need for more.

Each Panic Alarm will cost about Rs 6500. Please contribute towards this so we can indeed together make safe spaces for women and children within public transports in the city. The Alarms were designed with the help of engineering college students and now manufactured by a good public listed company based in Bangalore.
