Help leprosy afflicted students get life-skills training

About the campaign

The disability caused by leprosy and the associated stigma mean those affected by the disease are often prevented from earning their livelihood. Pushed into poverty, persons affected by and their families fight a battle even larger than the disease. Even as they become economically marginalized, they become alienated from their families and communities.

In this scenario, education and training can be the path that leads them out of poverty.

The Leprosy Mission Trust of India (TLMTI)’s six Vocational Training Centers (VTCs) offer government-recognised certified courses which meet market demands and the specific physical needs of people affected by leprosy (e.g. limited mobility etc). Students are also provided with life skills training, career counselling, and self-care training to prevent disability or injury at home or at the workplace.

Students include those who are personally affected by leprosy, those from a leprosy background (parents affected by leprosy), those with general disabilities and other marginalized youth. After students complete their training, TLMTI facilitates placements with corporate partners or enables them to be self-employed.

From there, most of the students go on to live a normal life. A life that once seemed a far-fetched dream for many of them.
