Who is Punarnawa?
The district of Sundergarh in Odisha had no heritage of handicrafts tradition even when Odisha is a home to maximum number of handicrafts. Unabated conflicts and frequent natural disasters make it one of the most impoverished places, and the handicrafts traditions today face near extinction. But this place is home to people like Rashmita who, in spite of all challenges are determined enough not only to keep the tradition of centuries alive, but also travel far and wide one day to take Applique to the world. Punarnawa is the story of such women.
In Sanskrit Punah-Nawa means - that which renews itself every moment. Three clusters of Punarnawa crafts are today scripting the story of revival for Applique and Dokra. These clusters today employ over thirty artisans from the nearby villages.
What do we do & why do we do?
Punarnawa is a grassroots organization and is a socio –economic model that engages traditional artisans and creates modern products. We connect the urban and rural life through means of craft. We provide design interventions, livelihood development and artisan trainings in our effort to create a perfect balance between youthful exuberance and ethnic heritage.
In 2011 Shaswat Mohanty & Subrata Pandey identified the need to empower women by providing them with a secondary livelihood. They have trained more than 100 artisans so far. They are soon looking at expanding into clothing and textile to support the weaving community Odisha

Why are we crowd funding?
We are expanding to support the weaving community by creating cluster of artisans and training them on professional sewing skills. Empowering and training 15 women and 4 men artisans on a 3000 INR or 50 USD/ Month will cost Rs.6,48,000 or 10642 USD for an year.
them to be independent means we will needs to them for having assured income and be independent, I am raising towards the stipend payment of
We will need Rs. 200,000 (USD 3200) for purchase of clothes, scrap brass, advance sewing machine, buffing wheel and electric motor. In year, each cluster is expected to do business of over Rs. 5,00,000 (USD 17,000) providing sizeable income to the artisans.
The idea is to train these artisans and provide them with a sustainable profession in crafts that is important to the revival of the ancient heritage and village economy.

Why do I believe in them ?
I have personally known them from the time they started in 2011. They duo Shaswat Mohanty & Subrata Pandey have worked very hard to keep the craft of Orissa alive and work at a grassroot level with community.
Its my Immense pleasure to support them for this cause, I hope you will join me in supporting too.
Message from Subrata Pandey, Co-Founder, Punarnawa Crafts

Dear Reader,

As you may know, I've been working with Punarnawa Crafts for the last three years. We are currently looking to scale our efforts to sustain and engage minimum of 50 women and 10 men this year. We need your support to create a movement where artisans like Rashmita and her traditions find the respect they deserve.
For every Rs. 10,000 (USD 200) contribution we give a hand-made gift pack and a letter of gratitude from artisans.

With Gratitude
Subrata
