About the campaign

Hi,
I am Lavanya, a mother of a 3-year-old son. I take on other labels too, writer, doer and recently, marathon runner but as a mother I have begun understanding the world of children. For children to grow into responsible citizens and confident adults, children need love and appreciation. Children need encouragement and care. I've understood that children learn and grow when the environment is fun and loving. Sometimes, rather unfairly, the world is divided into the privileged and the not-so-privileged. The dividing line is invisible but everybody can see it because of what's missing on the other side.

I am running Mumbai Marathon 2015 for Apni Shala because they not only cross the dividing line but, in their own dedicated way, they're filling in the missing pieces. They're educating children. They're teaching them to think, to question, to probe. They're teaching them to believe in themselves. They call it life-skills building.
As they say the race doesn't always go to the swiftest but to the ones who keep running.

MORE ABOUT THE CAUSE:

Apni Shala goes beyond ‘academic knowledge’ and focuses on building interpersonal skills, emotion management and critical thinking skills in children. To do this, they engage children in experiential learning programs like community project work that has them going out into the real world, critically analyzing social problems and implementing solutions in the real world!

Their approach to such ‘life skill’ education is that instead of preachy moral science texts (like you probably had in school!) we make things more practical for them so that they’re always challenging themselves to problem-solve, make healthy decisions, build better relationships and work towards a positive goal!

How do children benefit from this? Experiences lead to self-discovery! Today, 70% of children engage in finding solutions to negative behavior in their everyday life. They are also better at:
• Critically analysing and resolving a tough situation in their daily lives and in society
• Taking initiative to solve problems around them
• Evaluating their value systems
