    Eating The Sun Charitable Trust

    from Bangalore, Karnataka

Eating The Sun is a registered non-profit trust working on providing renewable energy solutions for rural homes in India with no electric power.

The founders of the trust are passionate about bringing solar powered lighting to rural homes in the dark. The trust is funded by individual and corporate charitable contributions and uses technology integrated by the founding members. The mission of the trust is to bring solar lighting to rural homes below poverty line with school going children. This is a small step to help those living in darkness of poverty, has a big impact in the homes which are lit up with solar power instead of kerosene lamps. Kerosene lamps cause pollution and impact the health of school children forced to study in its feeble glare.

The proposal here is to create a solar powered micro-grid for 70-100 homes in Napoklu hamlet in Madikeri district in Karnataka which have no access to electricity. Each house participating in the solar powered grid will get 4 LED lamps for lighting purpose. Funding for this project is being solicited from Corporates’ Social responsibility programs. Funds for this project will be used to procure the solar panels, batteries, LED lamps, wiring and semi-skilled man power needed to set up the grid under the expert guidance of the trust members. Currently the trust has installed 2kW of solar power generating installation in Coorg and has the capacity to install in 3 homes in a day. So the project can be expected to complete in 45 days once funds are procured.

The installations that we have done so far can be seen here.
