Dear Supporters,

Here's an update. We had a word with the family this morning and were informed that Kajal's treatment is still ongoing and she is recovering slowly. Her facial burns are getting better and she is responding to the treatment being administered and the family is withdrawing funds as and when needed. As on date, Rs 6 Lakhs has been withdrawn towards treatment costs.

Please find below the receipt of the INR 3 lakhs that were transferred directly to the hospital bank account and also, the cheque of Rs 3 Lakh that was issued to Kajal's father during our in-person visit on 30 April, 2019:

We have been made aware that there has been a certain news article  that questioned the utilization/release of funds for this particular fundraiser.

We have found this to be misleading with many facts misrepresented. We have spoken to the concerned media house and the journalist and provided our official statement outlining the facts and timeline of events.

In the interest of transparency, we share the same with all donors.
We urge you to reach out to us over whatsapp (+919916174848) or write to us at feedback@milaap.org if you have any queries regarding the sam

A fundraiser was set up on Milaap, on April 21, 2019, by Mr. Shubham Kumar (campaign organizer, cousin of Kajal) towards the treatment of 17-year-old Kajal (beneficiary), post an alleged intrusion and acid attack. After verifying the authenticity with the treating hospital and financial need with the beneficiary’s family,  the fundraiser was approved to raise funds on the platform. Over the course of the past 12 days, progress on Kajal’s health and recovery and updates (with relevant pictures) have been posted on the fundraiser page, informing donors of the same. A total of fifty lakh ninety-nine thousand, five hundred and thirty-two has been raised through 3766 donors on Milaap. Once the entire amount was raised, the fundraiser was stopped on  April 27, 2019, as per the campaign organizer’s request.

As part of our follow up process, two of our team members visited the hospital met with the survivor’s father: Mr Gautam Kumar Sah, the campaign organizer: Mr Shubham Kumar, the treating doctor: Dr Jayanto Tapadar and the inspector of local police station: Mr Mohd Khan, apart from seeing Kajal who was under treatment.

After receipt of bills for the treatment paid thus far and outstanding, a cheque of INR 3 Lakh was issued in Mr. Gautam Kumar’s name and was handed over on April 30th, 2019 and another fund transfer of INR 3 Lakh was initiated as a bank transfer to the treating hospital.

Furthermore, the family has been made aware that they can request for fund transfer to the hospital or to the father’s account anytime during the course of treatment. This request can be placed directly through the campaign page, by calling us on our phone number or sending us an SMS/WhatsApp message on our number. This policy is in line with our commitment to periodically update donors on the status of the beneficiary’s treatment and progress. Any surplus funds available will be transferred to the father’s account upon Kajal’s discharge from the hospital.

Donors who contributed to this campaign were made aware of these developments through a detailed update posted on the campaign page on May 1st, 2019 (https://milaap.org/fundraisers/support-kajal-11#updates-tab), and the same has been communicated to them through email and WhatsApp.

The cheque issued to Mr. Gautam Kumar was deposited to the bank on May 3, 2019 (Friday) but since the bank branch that Gautam approached was incorrect, the payment could not be processed. We were made aware of the same on May 6, 2019 (Monday) and were informed by Mr. Gautam Kumar that it has been resubmitted for processing. Our team is in touch with the family to aid in this process.

We would like to assure that we are in constant touch with all stakeholders - the family, the hospital and the donors. They are well informed regarding the proceedings of this fundraiser and have a way to connect with Milaap directly via email, WhatsApp or phone for any issues.

Milaap’s foremost priority is to ensure trust and transparency across all stakeholders - donors, campaign organizers and beneficiaries alike with relevant processes and systems. Over the last 9 years, over 150,000 fundraisers from across India have raised Rs 550 Crores for their needs and causes.

Dear Supporters,

Thank you for your support. As mentioned earlier, two of our team members handling the campaign (Ms. Aarthi G and Mr Pahul K) visited the family and the hospital in Varanasi yesterday (30 April, 2019). Here's a detailed update on the same:

We went to the hospital in the morning around 10:30 AM and met the father- Gautam Kumar Sah. He was moved to see the support you've all given and thanked everyone from the bottom of his heart. Shubham, Kajal's cousin joined us too and helped us meet the doctor, Dr Jayanto Tapadar and the local sub-inspector of police, Mr Mohd Khan.

Dr. Jayanto told us that Kajal needs to be observed closely since the injuries are grave. Majorly, her hands are severely burnt and may have extended till her bones as well. Her vitals are stable but she is still critical, unable to move and talk normally. Since her recovery is taking time, the course and the duration of the treatment cannot be predicted. She needs skin grafting for her arms, chest and back since the acid caused major damage in these areas. But to be able to undergo the surgery, she needs to come out danger.

Here's a picture of Kajal under observation

[Note: The image may be considered graphic]

The sub inspector, Md. Khan, is at the hospital at all times. He's around to make sure the family is covered and there are no unnecessary movements in the hospital and Kajal is safe. He was very accommodating and the family also let us take a quick look at the FIR copy given to the family.

We also received the hospital bills till date which were for around Rs 3 Lacs. We have transferred the same amount of Rs 3 Lacs to the father's bank account, of which the hospital is also informed.

Both the hospital and the family shall let us know as and when there are fresh bills to be paid off and we shall initiate a transfer to keep the treatment going and avoid any hindrance in the same. All surplus funds available post Kajal's treatment and discharge shall be transferred to the bank account of the father.

Here's a picture of Mr. Gautam and Shubham (campaign organizer and well-wisher) receiving the cheque (L-R):

We shall keep you posted on the status of treatment as and when we receive the same. Once again, we appreciate all donors who came forward to support the family in their hour of need.

Regards,
Team Milaap

Dear Supporters,

Thank you for your tremendous love. We got in touch with the junior doctor- Dr. Gautam and the father and they informed us that Kajal is getting better slowly but is still critical. She is on fluids and the course of treatment will be decided once she completely stabilizes. She has been trying to talk and is showing signs of improvement.

We have paused the campaign for now since it reached it's goal. We've also spoken to Kajal's father.

One of our team members will be visiting the family and the hospital tomorrow for the transfer of funds and to wish them well.

We shall keep you posted. Thank you again.
