i-Saksham: Experiencing the power of community!
Dear All,

We hope that you and your near-dear ones are safe and healthy. This update is to share with you how our edu-leaders* and community have inspired us in this time of crisis and transformed the ways education is reaching children at home in deep interior pockets of Munger (most affected in Bihar State), and Jamui Districts of Bihar. We seek your support to circulate this update among relevant networks for exploring collaboration opportunities and ideas for further innovative ways.
Step 1: Assessing the ground situation
Our team did a telephonic survey of about 500 parents to check how the community is faring and the status of learning among children. We learned that:

Step 2: Designing delivery for maximum impact: i-Saksham took the following approach:

Edu-leaders teaching over the
phone for 2 hours every day.

                      Children being assisted by parents.

                                              Encouraging self-learning
Step 3: Creative initiatives by edu-leaders

a. Storytelling through phone

Sonam, a fellowship alumna took the initiative to narrate stories to her students through the phone.
After narrating stories to them, she gives writing and drawing based homework to children to express their learning.

b. Teaching mathematics online

Praveen, an edu-leader from the second batch of fellowship convinced parents to share smartphones with children for at least 2 hours/day.
He is now making them solve mathematics exercises through phone/video calls.

c. Distributing worksheets through Kirana store

Anshu, an edu-leader came up with an amazingly innovative idea of distributing worksheets to the parents of her students through her father's Kirana store.

Learning and way forward

Such times push us to the wider limits of our imagination. The challenge is immense, and there can be no substitute for the in-person classroom learning. Our community is taking all the possible efforts in the event of school close-downs and limited internet availability.

We took an integrated approach to train our edu-leaders, give them access to digital content, prepare structured lesson plans, and involve caregivers.

We look forward to your suggestions on strengthening the approach further.
