Fundraise for a Cause with Milaap : the Best Crowdfunding | Milaap
2nd March 2022
Hello Friends,

Thank you for the contribution to the campaign. Some changes are being made to the campaign today extending the support to more survivors. We aim to provide immediate treatment aid to 14 survivors.

Here's the updated campaign details:

Introduction:
This is a one-of-a-kind fundraising initiative that is created to assist survivors of acid attack with their surgeries. The project is also part of the organization's larger goal of providing free treatments and pre- and post-hospitalization care to the community of acid attack survivors at its rehabilitation centre Sheroes Home. The community which does not appear to be small as neither the number of such incidents nor the quality of medical care provided to the survivors appears to be improving.

This fundraiser project proposes to help to acid attack survivors in their medical treatment. The Key objective is the assessment of the medical condition of the survivors, design of medical care plans on individual basis, assessment of complications after surgery and cost estimate. Because the medical procedure is lengthy and necessitates numerous visits and resources, we are raising a significant portion of the funds required for the medical drive through this campaign while simultaneously seeking out other groups to expedite the process.

Acid Attacks are predominantly a problem of India, with a wide gulf between city and town when it comes to care. More than just an individual problem, such attacks often affect face and eye, including blindness, is a societal one that can broadly affect economic productivity and access to education, leading survivor to live in isolation. Situation is worst as the specialized treatments are only available in 2-3 hospitals in whole India and one travels more than 1000 KM to receive the treatments. Many times, people lose their hope and never receive treatments.

About the Organization:
We are a Delhi based NGO, founded in 2014 we, today, are a network of almost 100 acid attack survivors among them 30 are employed with the foundation on different projects. Chhanv works in the multiple directions for at-risk, socially isolated acid attack survivors. Chhanv works as one point center for all kind of help needed to a survivor.

The Chhanv Foundation is relentlessly working for the betterment of acid attack survivors and believes in providing equal opportunity to the survivors along with good quality treatment. Thus, we prioritize their medical treatment and run a treatment drive.

Chhanv Foundation & Medical Drive:
The treatment drive is an effort to deliver better-quality treatment, medications, and surgery to survivors, through funds raised and collaborations. The organisation hopes to create a work plan with many stakeholders, such as government agencies, corporate partners, and individual supporters.

We have received support from a variety of stakeholders in recent years, including Shoppers Stop, Citrix India, Ganga Hospital (Coimbatore), Deepika Padukone, Zakir Khan and others. We hope to get more and more helping hands to provide a normal life to these survivors.

In the past one year the organization has initiated several online campaigns/Collaborations to ensure the best medical treatments to our beneficiaries. The survivors who were supported by this initiative;
  • Bala who received for Kidney Failure- Funds raised: Rs 16.27L (Deepika Padhukone Contributed Rs 15L in the campaign)
  • Khalda, Pramodini, Himanshu, Tuna Devi, Nandkishore & Anshu Rajput at Shankar Netralaya, Chennai helped through Chhanv Foundation Treatment Drive Funds Raised: Rs 21L
  • Sutapa Das, Rajneeta, Mausami, Rupali at Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore
  • Nandkishor- Rs 1.18L
  • Himanshu- Rs 1.5L
  • Through CITRIX India- Rs 15L (Helped 15 survivors in first round of treatment)
  • Khushboo from Gonda treated at KGMU, Lucknow
  • Farah Khan at SIPS, Lucknow
SHEROES HOME & Its SIGNIFICANCE IN MEDICAL PROCESS;
In acute cases of an acid attack, the model provides post-hospitalization relief and care to patients of severe acid burns victimized in the attack, especially women and child, to help them recover from the physical trauma and social stigma caused after an acid attack. This relief centre acts as a transitional zone between the hospital and the community where survivors of such traumatic violence are taught the requisite skills needed to be reintegrated into the community. Relief care seeks to accomplish two main purposes
  • To help the acid attack survivors with post-hospitalization medical care
  • To engage the acid attack survivors in various skill development, vocational training and recreational activities helping them fasten recovery from stigma they have been facing

Pandemic and its effect on Sheroes Home:

To operate the Sheroes Home we need rent, utilities and commodities necessary to sustain the survivors. Earlier, the revenue generated by the 'Sheroes Hangout' (a cafe run by acid attack survivors and the empowerment model of Chhanv Foundation) and occasional donations were holding up the Sheroes Home. But the repercussion of pandemic led to the shutdown of the cafes, and in turn sheroes home is getting affected due to this. The pandemic led to several liabilities due to which the survivors may lose this space as it is on the verge of being shut down.

Pledge
The gravity of the acid attack can be felt through the scars, deformities and pain it leaves behind for a survivor to suffer throughout their life. Despite the survivors having grown stronger, the thought of not seeing the same person in front of the mirror as they were prior to attack haunts them often. The question is not only about their looks but also about their consequent disabilities that hampers them to simply live. This serves the very intent of attackers who are atrocious enough to inflict such pain. Therefore, the issue being a part of society, it is important for us to come forward and help these acid attack survivors in all possible ways and defeat the purpose of attackers altogether.
.
Why we are raising the funds—Statement of Need
We are looking for help in the treatment and restore the services of Sheroes Home. The key areas which will be covered in this project are
  • Hospital Fee
  • Logistical expenses during treatments in metro cities
  • Living expenses and after care at Sheroes Home
Regional centers and hospitals in India are inadequate and unequipped. As outstation stay and expensive treatment is a major problem because most of the victims are from economically weaker background, for them it is not possible to bear the cost of operations and surgeries for a long time.

The previous experience suggested that often, travel and lodging cost in big cities are more than operation costs, because of which the surgeries take years to complete. Medical costs are so expensive and major hospitals don’t have even the basic facilities such as diagnosis or dressings. We are working with government agencies to cover the hospital fee of the survivors when they undergo surgeries. As outstation stay and after care is a costly affair, we want to ensure that survivors get uninterrupted medical care in their crucial phases.

Why should you contribute?
This is a very crucial moment and we are looking for your participation as there has been a shift post-COVID lockdown, from delayed treatments to more hygienic needs for those who can’t afford it.

Surviving acid burn injuries can be a traumatic and distressing injury to cope with and the often prolonged recovery process can stress an individual or family’s resources. Burn injury patients survive with larger and more severe burns within the current medical system.

Most of the hospitals are still not fully functional and travel/stay in major cities has become too expensive. Many girls couldn’t travel to cities for their routine check-ups and this affected their physical condition.

Hence, we as a part of civil society, need to take the responsibilities and help the less fortunate ones. Let us walk through this together and make India free from acid attacks!
