Update from Chennai!

Case 2 #ChhanvTreatmentDrive
#Khalda
Khalda's eye Diagnosis at #SankarNethralaya Hospital in Chennai.
Khalda was 2½ years old then. A 3 years old kid, who does not even recognize people properly, had to go through so much pain at this tender age. But she was not the only one to suffer; her elder sister bore much more pain than this little kid that she could not take it anymore and succumbed to death. Khalda’s elder sister was attacked by their neighbour Javed as she had denied his marriage proposal a few days ago. Her elder sister (deceased) was the primary victim in the case and khalda, as well as her brother Nadeem, was injured during the attack.  Upon her refusal, he very brutally attacked her with a full bottle of strong acid when she went to fetch water from her neighbourhood. Khaleda's sister suffered 100% burns on her body while she had 20% on hers.

Khalda is 28 years old now. She does not remember the incident very clearly but the scars don’t allow her to forget them either.
The incident dates back to 1995, due to lack of focus of the society towards acid-related crimes and development of the law towards these cases, the attacker wasn’t properly tried or punished. He was sentenced for 10-12 years of Punishment that is to say; he is free now, living with his family in Bombay whereas Khalda and her family still demand justice and monetary compensation for her surgeries.

Dear friends,

Many thanks for your love. In such uncertain and tough situations, we can not ask for more. The amount of love, care and support you have shown, could not be expressed in the words. It is really commendable and appreciable.

2020 was unpredictable and brought many challenges for the organization. Reach-out was one of those. Reach-out is a process of Reaching out to Survivors. It is the base of the whole rehabilitation process. We reach out to both the new cases and old cases which are connected to us. This process was completely stopped due to COVID.

As life is getting back on track, we too have initiated the process of reach-out. In the very first month of 2021, we began the reach-outs and called survivors of acid attacks to our rehabilitation centre, Sheroes Home, Noida. This drive was conducted from 8th Jan to 15th Jan 2021. A total of seven beneficiaries have visited and shared their case studies with us and we ensured them the help which they need;
  • Nagma from Balrampur, UP
  • Shahnwaz, Meerut, UP
  • Khushma and Urmila, Fatehpur, UP
  • Sonu from Bihar
  • Mausami from West Bengal
  • Farah from Bareilly, UP
  • Amit from Ghaziabad, UP
We will share their case studies in the detail in the further updates reflecting their stories, medical status and the help they need.

To help raise the rest of the amount faster, Milaap is offering a 5% matching on all the payments (till 23:59Hrs, Sunday, 7-Feb-2021). This means for every 5000 INR, Milaap will contribute an additional 250 INR to the campaign thereby creating 1.05X the impact.
