Dear Supporters,

Here is an update on Sai Saran.
Sai Saran is getting better on ECMO and has improved since the last few days. His ECMO support has been decreased to about 30% from the initial settings. He continues to have normal organ functions(kidney, liver, heart, and brain) except the lung. We are giving him powerful antibiotics to control the blood infection and he is responding to that.

If everything goes well, he should be on track to weaning from ECMO in another 1 week. He will still need mechanical ventilation for another few days as he has been on the ventilator a long time, needing a lot of sedation to make him comfortable. He might also need a surgery for inserting the breathing tube in his neck( tracheostomy) and possibly a surgery on the lung (Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery)  to help expand the lung more.

The clinical team thanks the people who supported him and who have been patient enough with the slow progress that he has made until now. With more time and more support, this young boy should be soon on the way to recovery.

Regards,
Dr. Sajith Kesavan

Hello,

Sai Saran is still needing ECMO support as his lung infection is taking time to clear. We have now completed 24 days on ECMO .He otherwise remains stable with normal kidney ,heart and liver functions. He is slowly waking up from his sedation but still is sedated with medicines to prevent the ECMO  cannulaes from getting accidentally dislodged.

Sai has cleared the infection in the blood . He is being fed through the tube in the nose and is tolerating his food. He still needs hopefully another one or two weeks to clear the lung and be ready to come off ECMO. He continues to have a fighting chance to come off ECMO if the lung clears. Even after coming off ECMO he will need some time to come off ventilator.

There have been no major complications in his ECMO run as yet except for minor oozing from nose and mild bleeding into the lung which is part of the lung injury in pneumonia. He is still getting strong antibiotics and other supportive care.
Thank you for the support so far. We will keep you posted on the progress.
