Dear Supporters,

As per our mentioned future plans, we require at least 75% of the target set on Milaap, but as of now we have reached around 50%. We are looking for some new generous donors who could help us in executing all our long term plans as well. The money, as of now, is being utilized in immediate relief camps but our most important target are the long term activities like mangrove plantation and other ecological activities that will begin with the onset of monsoon.
Hence we wish to get generous help of everyone for few more weeks.

As of 30th June 2020: Over 8 Panchayats in Sagar Island of Sundarbans Delta were provided with immediate relief materials and other day-to-day things. We are all aware that Cyclone Amphan has devastated Sagar Island and that is why SGEA is doing most of their relief camps over here. Below are few area-wise reliefs provided, in detail.

  • Ramkarchar :
Located in Sagar Block, here most of the houses have been damaged because of the storm. Majority of the people are farmers and workers who go to cities in search of work, among them are people who live near the shore. These people have lost everything because of COVID-19 and the Amphan cyclone . The current situation is very unpleasant. The people are not getting 2 square meals a day and have lost the roof over their heads. SGEA has provided basic rations to these families.

  • Sumatinagar, Gram Panchayat :
Two bank areas of this panchayat have been destroyed due to erosion by the sea. These people have lost their houses as well as livelihoods due to this cyclone. They have lost all ways of income. Here, 250 families have been given basic daily food supplies. Over 300 families have been severely affected by this storm.

  • Bankimnagar, Gram Panchayat :
Over 400 families of Sagar Block in Ghoramara and Botkhali have been affected due to the erosion of the banks. These families are somehow managing to survive under a single roof , in extremely poor living conditions. They don’t have their own lands , so they work as laborers and do different jobs for a living. Most of them go to cities in search of better jobs , but lockdown and Amphan have costed these poor people both their jobs and houses. SGEA has helped them by providing rations, makeshift houses and fish cultivation for their survival.

  • Dhablat Shibpur, Gram Panchayat :
It is located at the South of Sagar island, in the lap of the Bay of Bengal. For several years now, water has entered the homes of the inhabitants here during storms. Amphan was no different. Alongside the area being drowned, people have lost their homes. Several villagers have lost their lands and some have had to abandon their home every year, fearing the wrath of the sea. These people are constantly at war with nature and fleeing places to save their lives. SGEA was able to get them rations and immediate needs but if we don't come up with a long term solution of assistance, they'd have to flee again.

  • Radhakrishnapur :
Officially 27 families own lands here and have settled over the years. Collecting crabs and honey from the forest are their primary occupation. Nowadays, some of them go to the city to work as laborers. They have had almost no education at all. Whatever meagre earnings they get from collecting, goes towards sustaining their families. Apart from these families, there are 25 other families that own no land. They have lost their only roofs in the storm and are barely surviving under makeshift plastic roofs. SGEA has been able to provide 15 days worth of ration to these people.

  • Muriganga :
Situated in no. 1 gram panchayat of sagar block. Due to Amphan, nearly 150 families had been affected. Their houses were destroyed by salty water. Besides that, all 500 families of the area have been highly affected by the storm and are in a pathetic condition at the moment. Most of the people here are daily wage earners, labourers and small farmers. The parents are absolutely devastated to even arrange some food for their children. Due to this disaster, Amphan leaving the hundreds of people unemployed, the only option that seems feasible in this current scenario (considering a major part of the work force was involved in agricultural segment and since the land has turned infertile) is migrating the work force to areas where there are job opportunities for the people to earn something for themselves as well as their families. They are facing a terrible situation at this juncture. SGEA has made some arrangements of milk and baby food for their children. We also have arrangements made for food and have provided some tarpaulins for shelter purposes.

Dear Supporters,

Thank you for your Support

5th June: Celebrated as the World Environment Day worldwide. The fast disappearing Sundarbans Delta is a precious part of our environment, consisting of the largest mangrove cover in the world. And this day, Team SGEA yet again acknowledged our duty to protect this treasure of nature from the continuous cyclones of the Bay of Bengal.

SGEA has been working for several years, spreading awareness about the Mangroves and their importance in the ecological balance. They believe we should not delay the mangroves plantation even by one day so that these mangroves get more time to protect us.

On this Environment Day, team SGEA led by the Mangrove Man, Pranabesh Maiti, has initiated few things:
1. Spot Identification for the mangrove plantation across Kumirmadi, Gosaba, Namkhana, Sagar, and Pathar Pratima islands.
2. Training Local Volunteers on preparing the saplings and everything related to the plantation.
3. Spreading Ecological Awareness and the importance of mangroves and making an appeal to the locals to join in the process.
4. Connecting with Local Authorities for full support on this.

Replenishing the Mangrove cover is highly necessary to protect our lands from cyclonic activities and it would not be possible without all your help and support.

That's how mangroves act as a line of defense against strong cyclones like Amphan and that is the reason Team SGEA and their volunteers across all islands are preparing every day for the plantation and once the season sets in, everyone will get together for protecting the delta.

Keep helping the Sundarbans and restore what was once our pride and is home to the Royal Bengal Tigers.
