28th April 2020
Dear Friends,

Till now, I was providing cooked food (6 poories and dry veg) to roughly 150 needy people daily. However from 27th April 2020 onwards I have started providing a food/ration kit of uncooked food items to the needy and poor #Daily_Wage_Earners in #Bhopal.

I have taken this decision to provide a food kit of uncooked food items because the number of corona cases in Bhopal has crossed 400 and it's very risky to go out daily to distribute food. Now I won't have to go out "daily" as this food kit will be sufficient to support a family of 4-5 people for roughly 1 week. We have increased the items in the food kit and included some vegetables as well. Now the food kit contains:
i. 5 Kg Wheat flour
ii. 2 Kg Basmati Rice (Broken)
iii. 1 Kg Toor Dal
iv. 1 Kg Sugar
v. 500ml edible Soyabean oil
vi. 1 Kg Potato
vii. 1 Kg Tomato
viii. 1 Kg Onion
The needy people include people collecting waste polythene from garbage, housemaids, guards, plumber, electricians, people living in slums, etc.

On 27th April 2020, we have distributed food to more than 50 people (for 50 families). This should be sufficient for roughly 200-250 people for roughly 1 week.

Positives moments during food distribution:
  • One day before the food distribution, I went outside to search the real needy people.
    • Just 200-300 meters from my house, I found 2 girls collecting polythenes/plastic, etc from the garbage.
    • Roughly 500 meters ahead (near Hotel Abhinav Palace), I found a lady and his son collecting polythenes/plastic, etc from the garbage.
    • Then after roughly 3 KM near Misrod Police Station, I found some ladies (from Rajasthan) sitting on the main road trying to sell the iron utensils like tava, chimta, kadhai etc. However, there was no sale because of the lockdown. So they didn’t have food to survive
    • I gave them my name, phone number, and address o a paper and asked them to come the next day i.e. 27th April between 9 AM to 11 AM. They said there are some more families like them who are in need of food. So I asked them to bring similar needy ones, and all of them came that day.
    • We gave a ration kit to our colony guard as well. Apart from him, we gave wheat flour to 2 nagar nigam employees who collect garbage from the colonies (only wheat was remaining. Next time we will give them full food kit).
  • This time, some other residents from my colony volunteered for food distribution.
  • Every needy person who came got the food.
Improvements for next time:
  • We expected roughly 20 people, but an unexpected number of people turned out for food. Close to 9 AM, there were roughly 10 people, then 20-25 more people came and then roughly 20 more. So more than 50 people turned out in total. I thought that we will distribute the procured food for 2-3 days. But because of the increased number of people, all food was over on 27th itself, between 9 AM-12noon.
  • Although we asked to bring one ID card (so that only one person from a family takes food. We didn't store their details). But we felt that some people (2-3) took twice and there were instances that multiple people from the same family came at different intervals (2-3 such families). But there was no perfect way to judge that. Next time we will make more strict checks. We may give them some kind of tokens with code and the same code will remain with us. We will not distribute food without matching food kits.
  • In the end, some items were not enough for all. So for some people (6-8), we reduced the quantity of some items i.e. rather than 2 Kg, 1 Kg rice was given; 500-gram sugar/potato/tomato. However, every person who came got the food.
All this was possible only because of your support and kind donations. I thank all of you for supporting this cause. I request you to #SHARE this campaign with your friend circle so that we can keep this going.

This weekend, I will again distribute the food kits.

Dear Friends,

Food packet distribution to the needy people (Daily Wage Earners) on 5th April 2020 in Bhopal.

We included construction sites near Abhinav Palace Hotel & Sheetal Heights residential complex, slum area near Surendra Landmark, Shani Mandir, Misrod. To some of them, we also donated small cash (although very small amount).

A video was shot by the construction site workers themselves (we didn't ask them to shoot). This can be accessed via the link https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10158061197383618&id=526078617

Today they came in proper queue, one by one. Felt very good that we are able to support them in this time of crisis. They are genuinely the needy ones.

Warm Regards,
Sandeep Shivhare
