‘Tribal Girls Are Regularly Trafficked For Sexual Slavery, Exploited And Forced Into Child Marriage. Help Me Save Them'

When a 52-year-old married a 14-year-old girl. He was about to traffic the girl and sell her. When I met her father. He told me, " My daughter's not educated. There's no school here. I am too poor to feed her, so I am marrying her off." I thought that many daughters like her are illiterate due to a lack of school. I felt when I will work for their education, the sexual harassment they go through will finally stop.If we educate a woman, she educates a whole generation. - Birendra Kumar, founder of Naya Sawera Vikas Kendra (NSVK)

In 1999, Birendra Kumar founded Naya Sawera Vikas Kendra, an NGO dedicated to helping underprivileged tribal girls. He established it after witnessing various atrocities that were taking place in remote areas.

Many rescued girls report physical and sexual abuse, with several cases of sexual slavery

“Many girls from tribal communities aren't safe at home. As their own parents, relatives often sell them for a small amount of money. We knew we had to help them because their situation was only getting worse, and they had no hope for a better life.” - Birendra Kumar, founder of Naya Sawera Vikas Kendra (NSVK)

Birendra grew up in a poverty stricken household. Despite being a bright student he struggled with getting the basic facilities. He and his siblings used to sit under a street lamp to complete their homework. For his entire college life he only wore one pair of pants.

In tribal areas, girls face numerous challenges, including sexual abuse. Predators take advantage of their vulnerability, particularly when they venture into the forest to collect firewood. Moreover, these regions are still notorious for thinking of declaring young girls as witches and killing them due to illiteracy and superstitions.

For 25 Years, Birendra Has Worked In Over 160 Villages By Rescuing And Educating Vulnerable Tribal Children

What else do they provide?
In a survey we found out that 636 girls were missing in one village and never returned back home. Birendra focuses on providing a support system to the girls. It extends its assistance beyond education, offering guidance and support in navigating the job market, facilitating job searches, and securing placements.

“ The area with a mostly tribal population has barely enough to farm and feed themselves. Educating themselves or their children is still a far fetched dream. The poor tribal girls have self confidence but they don't have any resources. There are no buses or public transport surrounding their villages. While autos are so expensive they can't afford it daily.”  - Birendra Kumar, founder of Naya Sawera Vikas Kendra (NSVK)

Our financial challenge is we can't afford the teacher's salary, stationeries, furniture and laptops for their school.

Until now, Birendra has been putting his own savings into taking care of these girls, whom he considers his own daughters. However, he wants to help more girls.
