Extensive research has been done on the impact of school libraries on a students learning, and they all more or less point to the following:
•A strong library program can lead to higher student achievements regardless of the socioeconomic or educational levels of the adults in the community.
•Libraries can make a positive difference to students’ self-esteem, confidence, independence and sense of responsibility in regard to their own learning.
•Higher test or exam scores equating to academic attainment, which includes academic attainment in the form of higher standardised test scores in reading, arts, history and maths, and better grades in curriculum assignments or exams

We are a team of 4 Gandhi Fellows working in Thane for the past 1.5 years. Collectively we are working with 20 primary schools in the district. We have been working to set up libraries since the past 4 months. Most of the schools have their own books, but they had been locked up in cupboards for years, which are now being accessed by the children.

You may ask, if we've already been working for 4 months, why raise money for books now? Good question. Well, as a lot of us might not know, a library doesn't mean just books. It starts with understanding what a library is. Then having the culture of reading, telling each other stories, of teachers incorporating activities in their lesson plans, etc. We felt it was important to work on these aspects first before getting books.

We aim to set up libraries in 3 schools, which have close to no books. The schools are as follows:
1.Thane Municipal Corporation School No 118- English Medium
2.Thane Municipal Corporation School No 98- Marathi Medium
3.Thane Municipal Corporation School No 79- Marathi Medium

The schools are located in the Mumbra and Diva regions of Thane district. Mumbra and Diva are both ever-expanding urban slums, byproducts of the “City of Dreams” Mumbai.

In addition to or in place of monetary help, you may also help us with books that you may have lying around the house which are not being used. The books should be in English or Marathi.
